just did a deep dive in my mind to recall this author, Byrd Baylor. i read her books when i was living in massachusetts and really becoming in tune with the natural worlds rhythms. her works, “everyone needs a rock” and “the way to start a day” stick with me. the illustrations by Peter Parnall are equally wonder-filled and wonder-filling. i want all of their books!!!!
So.. when I was a child my favorite book was called "The Desert is Theirs" by Byrd Baylor. I spent a good chunk of my childhood growing up on a reservation in AZ and the words and art just spoke to me on such a fundamental level even way back then. Well.. we moved around a lot after that and we lost a lot along the way. One of those things was my copy of this book. I found an old copy at a used book store and was elated. It was only when I got it home that I realized that this is a Signed Copy!!! Oh be still my heart!

On Listening
The old man said, "Most people never hear those things at all."
I said, "I wonder why."
He said, "They just don't take the time you need for something that important."
