The underside of a Velella velella, or by-the-wind-sailor. They are actually colonies of hydroids that live under the common float and "sail" that pushes them across the surface of the ocean. Preyed on by specialized nudibranchs and snails, and occasionally an ambitious ocean sunfish, these floating colonies will also sometimes meet their demises en masse when they wash up on beaches. They're not harmful to humans, just cute little sailor-companions out on the water! #bythewindsailor #velellavelella #jelly #oceans #sanctuarycruises #california #montereybay #mosslanding #monterey #santacruz #pacificocean #biology #science #marinebiology
