@devyn-morey
In which Sebastian breaks the cycle and tells Devyn the truth about Dian. [ Takes place October 20th ] tw: None really.
SEBASTIAN:
His phone was out of his pocket before he’d even gotten out of Isaac’s apartment building. The anger inside of him had been boiling over so much that sense and logical hadn’t caught up to him by the time he’d hit the call button on Devyn’s contact. It wasn’t until the second ring that he abruptly hung up with a shake of his head as he finally slowed his pace and allowed himself a moment to breathe. A moment to think about anything other than the irritation and betrayal that was pumping through his veins.
When he felt his heart rate slow ever so slightly, Sebastian tried again - his fingers tapping through his phone until he started a facetime call with his younger sibling (considering the whole… deaf thing would really put a damper on a phone call).
He wasted no time in picking up his pace again as the phone rang, getting to somewhere on the street that was relatively well lit as he used a storefront to prop his phone up and fidgeted in front of it until Devyn picked up. When they did, Sebastian didn’t even let them greet him, instead immediately launching into heated sign language immediately.
“Where are you? I need to tell you something. Like - fucking important. “
DEVYN:
The hardest thing about imitating behavior that you had only watched someone perform was, well, the techniques weren’t quite right. Devyn had watched Dodger run and jump across rooftops plenty of times but attempting to do it himself was an entirely different monster. He jumped from atop one building (he thought perhaps it was Jiminy’s office to Chapter Three? To be honest, Devyn was lost more than they cared to admit as a native) and landed just funny enough on their ankle to go tumbling face-first. They made it, thankfully, but they weren’t exactly graceful in life.
Groaning audibly, they noticed their phone displayed MISSED CALL—SNEEZY which was a rather uncommon occurrence. None of the brothers ever attempted an audio call with them, the idea was simply pointless for all involved. Devyn didn’t talk nor could they hear. Why would Sebastian attempt to voice call unless something was wr—
INCOMING FACETIME—SNEEZY
Oh, maybe he hit the wrong button...
Or, at least, that’s what Devyn assumed until they saw their older brother’s face.
“Hey, Seb, what’s—” There wasn’t even enough time for the question, Seb interjected so quickly that Devyn’s whole face froze in shock. “Chapter Three. I can meet you anywhere but I might be a little slow,” Devyn explained, glancing at their throbbing ankle. “Are you OK?”
SEBASTIAN:
No, no he didn't have time for slow. Not when it felt like his blood was boiling in his veins. The conversation he'd held with Isaac still replaying over and over in his head and drawing that irritation closer and closer to a full blown meltdown that Sebastian would simply not tolerate. It wasn't fair though. The whole situation wasn't fucking fair - and it hurt. It hurt him more than he wanted to ever admit.
But it wasn't just him.
No, every single brother had known. In some capacity, they'd been told. They knew. They held onto vital information while himself and Devyn were left out of the loop — and they didn't deserve that. Devyn didn't deserve that. Which was why even the delay of having to wait to meet up seemed too much to wait.
“No. No it's - I need to tell you now.” He signed back quickly before he ran a hand through his hair and glanced down the sidewalk. “They knew.” He started once he turned back, trying his best to keep that raw emotional from his features, but his hands still shook slightly as he signed.
“They all knew. Everyone but us. Isaac knew he was alive before he texted. Maybe Mads too — and then! Then he fucking… “
A pause to give a frustrated noise his sibling wouldn't hear.
“Isaac told me he's a vampire. That's.. That's what happened. That's why he's been gone. That's the reason. That he's a fucking vampire. And every single one of them fucking knew but us. “
DEVYN:
He’d already started getting up from his place on the roof, dusting the pebbles from his palms and the other dirt from his clothes as he watched Sebastian signing. Hobbling toward the fire escape at the edge of the building would be simple and then they would figure out how to meet up with Seb to talk about whatever this was.
At first the announcement that this mysterious they knew something was confusing for the youngest Morey. Who were they? Why did Devyn care if they knew something Devyn didn’t? A lot of people knew a lot of things that Devyn didn’t. They weren’t the brightest or most skilled in most areas of life so that would make sense that—
“They knew?!” Once the information being fed to Devyn clicked, the indignation and confusion mounted. Their eyes started to go milky white from their telepathic wave starting to spread out around them, their hands started shaking somewhat where they needed to sit back down to prop their phone up. “What do you mean they knew? If Isaac knew then why wouldn’t he at least say that Dian was alive?! We were putting posters up and worrying ourselves sick about Dian! All of us, the hospital staff, Anna! Everyone has been worried about him! With the disappearances and everything else!”
Devyn almost missed the ending in their spiral, their anger that mounted as they signed. Almost being the operative word, however, as the sign for vampire was rather distinct in BSL.
Dian was a vampire. Dian being a vampire meant that all of their brothers had lied through their teeth about the wellbeing of their oldest sibling, had meant that Devyn had encountered sleepless nights and an inability to concentrate on the most basic of things.
“Why would they keep this from us? Who cares if Dian’s a vampire?! At least he isn’t fully dead where we will never be able to see him again!? The rest of us are Gifted! What would we care if he’s a Magick now?!”
It didn’t make sense!
SEBASTIAN:
“I don't know!” He signed back angrily, repeating the gesture a second time because truly he just… didn't know. He didn't understand what the problem was. Why they couldn't at least tell them what was wrong. Couldn't tell them from the start that Dian wasn't fully dead as Devyn put it.
It made him angry at Dian the most. That he'd hid in that for as long as he did. That he'd apparently been the one to say don't tell anyone else. But it made him mad at everyone else just as much for listening. If Dian would have told him from the start? No fucking chance - he would have told everyone.
Just like now he rushed to tell Devyn. Why? Because they fucking deserved to know the truth about their brother. It was that simple.
'At least he isn’t fully dead where we will never be able to see him again' Well… that much was true for everyone else. Sebastian was certain even if he didn't want anything to do with that man (now or possibly ever) that he'd never be able to see him again anyways. Not with his magic. He didn't know the circumstances of that and he wasn't going to find out.
“I just… I don't know. You don't… you don't fucking keep that a secret. And they did. I.. I just can't believe them. We thought he was dead. We thought he hadn't been talking to anyone. We didn't know what he was doing or how he was and now I'm supposed to be okay with the fact everyone knew at some point while we didn't? “
DEVYN:
“This doesn’t make any sense,” Devyn insisted, rubbing at his eyes as he attempted to reign in his abilities. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t fair, and Devyn could feel his heart shattering the more they spoke on it. He needed to keep his composure, though, and couldn't let his frustration and confusion infect others.
Dian had helped teach Devyn how to calm down, had taught Devyn how to sign, had let Devyn move in with him, and encouraged him to better themselves at Pride University. All of those parts had left a bitter taste in Devyn’s mouth since Dian’s disappearance.
“How did Isaac find out? Can we go see Dian then? Where is he?” There were a million questions to ask, a million moving parts that Devyn could see in their mind’s eye. “I want to ask him what’s going on. Has anyone called Mama and Papa yet?”
Maybe Devyn was getting ahead of himself here but there was a lot to do if their brother was a new vampire. He would need to find a support group, find a sustainable and ethical source of blood, find a new job since the hospital would no longer be an option for the eldest child.
“Are you OK?”
SEBASTIAN:
“I don’t know.” He signed back to each of the questions that his sibling asked - because every single one of them he didn’t know the answer to. He didn’t know how Isaac knew, though based off their conversation he could assume that Dian had just decided that it was okay to talk to every sibling except for them evidently. Still, he had no idea how exactly their older brother knew. Didn’t know where he was (at this point he didn’t care either), and no again, he didn’t know if anyone called the parents.
Again though, he could assume based off of… everything, that no. No one probably had. Dian’s parents likely didn’t know their eldest and blood son was alive. After everything. Maybe Devyn and himself wouldn’t be the last ones to know after all. It came as no consolation to know Dian would have hid this entire thing from his parents too though.
“I don’t know.” Sebastian signed one more time, this one following a resigned sigh that slipped through his lips as he glanced down the empty street and shrugged his shoulders. Physically he was fine. Mentally he was… unsure. It just… hurt. To be… betrayed like this. Not only from Dian but from everyone. It felt…. Like shit. It felt like shit and it only made Sebastian feel more and more irritated towards their oldest brother.
“I just… don’t fucking get it. It’s stupid. He’s stupid. All of them are. It’s… it’s just ridiculous. I don’t get how any single one of them thought this was okay, you know?”
DEVYN:
Their heart sank as they watched Seb spiral in front of them, guilt rising in their chest despite their not having done anything to cause the pain in their brother’s eyes. Sebastian didn’t know any more than Devyn did and the youngest Morey needed to stop asking more of him than he could offer.
They glanced at their throbbing ankle, wondering idly if Dodger ever injured himself like that when he went running around the town. Devyn just wanted to be like the older men that they admired so much, wanted to make his brothers proud and impress the cool people that they met.
It seemed as though their brothers, other than Sebastian, had little concern with what Devyn would think of them for their own actions.
“Do you want to meet up? I don’t really want to be alone right now but, if you do, I can go talk to Edward in the dorms.” It was really all Devyn could offer, the only solace that they could hold out as an olive branch to their big brother. “Their behavior makes no sense. It’s hurtful and stupid and I don’t get it but thank you for telling me. I’m glad you didn’t leave me in the dark like they did to us.”
SEBASTIAN:
“Of course I would tell you. It wasn’t even a thought.” Because why shouldn’t he tell his sibling? Why shouldn’t Devyn be privy to the information that the rest of their brothers knew? It wasn’t fair that something so big - so important was kept from them. Sebastian wasn’t going to continue the cycle and leave them in the dark to figure it out later. Whenever later might’ve been.
No absolutely not.
Dian might’ve been okay with that, but Sebastian sure as hell wasn’t. Which is why he had to tell Devyn. It was why he wanted to tell their parents too - God knows they probably had no idea! However he'd relent on that if only because well — not his fucking parents. If Dian wanted to be a dick head to his own flesh and blood, so be it. Sebastian wouldn't lie to them if they asked though.
A sigh pushed through his lips and Sebastian shrugged. He did want to be alone right now actually. He always did when it came to shitty situations like this. Seb tended to isolate himself whenever such things occurred. Though he felt bad that Dev didn't want to be. He should be there for his sibling, to comfort them. Yet, he just kept finding himself angrier and angrier. Perhaps it was for the best not to see them… not now.
"...Later. I.. — later, okay? I'm.. I'm not really in the right place." He tried to explain, knowing he didn't want to take his anger out on the completely undeserving party. "I…. I'll text you. I just… - I need to cool off I think."
DEVYN:
They knew they shouldn’t take the rejection personally, that Sebastian had his own emotions to work through. None of the Moreys had been particularly open about their pasts, all understanding that that door was open should they wish to discuss it but also accepting that Swynlake and the Morey house was their new home, their new futures. Devyn was of the mindset not to traverse back through all of that mess.
“Later, yeah. For what it’s worth I’m sorry they did that.” Devyn didn’t really know if it did mean anything, if their apology during their own anger would even translate well, but they didn’t understand what else they could say. Their heart stung and they were sure their emotions would spike later again when they tried to explain to Edward what had happened. For now they could try to mitigate Sebastian’s own offense.
“I love you, Seb. Just text me later and I’ll meet up. Any time or place.” They didn’t want to hang up, didn’t want to be alone, but they weren’t too far from campus, they could hobble their way back home and try to put the pieces together with their roommate if it meant that Seb had the space to heal himself as well.
“If it wasn’t clear before this then you’re my favorite brother.”
SEBASTIAN:
“Don’t. You have nothing to be sorry for.” Even though he knew that wasn’t what Devyn was saying, but he still didn’t want those words anywhere near his lips - that weight even close to falling atop their shoulders. The other didn’t deserve it. Not when they of all people were the very last to know what Sebastian considered pretty essential information.
Giving a small huff of a laugh, Sebastian nodded slightly. They were never to pick favorites. It wasn’t how their family worked (though they clearly all had favorites anyways). For example, everyone knew Mads and Dian were the closest. That Sebastian far favored the ones he’d grown up with the most over the ones he’d barely seen. If anyone asked, no there were no favorites, of course but… there totally was - and yeah, right about now Devyn was his favorite too.
“...An honor.” He teased lightly, letting his lips curl up in a small hint of a smile before they dropped again with another sigh - the older man casting his gaze down the street. This was so stupid. Dian was so stupid. “....I love you too, Dev. Be careful, okay? I uh.. I promise I’ll text you tomorrow.” He just… needed tonight to cope in his own ways. Ones in which he didn’t want to subject Devyn to.
So later. He would text them later, they would meet up and share their grievances… bitch about how everyone in the family had been a dickhead to them. Bond over their shared annoyance - probably have a good laugh or two.
But for now… for now Sebastian waved goodbye and when the call ended his hands grabbed his phone back off the ledge of the building, glancing down the street again as another heavy breath left his lips. He couldn’t go home. Not with everyone risking being there. Couldn’t go back to Isaac’s. Didn’t want to. Didn’t want to risk running into anyone in Pixie’s or the Court.
So….guess the NTO it was.
Happy Birthday, Greg!!
Can't believe we've known each other for SO LONG!!! You're totally making me feel OLD!!

“Hey, you,“ Devyn said, waving playfully at her girlfriend as she crossed they field. “So, are you sure you want me at your big family thing? Could cause quite a scene.” @the-lodge-to-my-ronnie
