I know I’ve said that Vik primarily uses stims to ensure his operating hand remains as steady as possible for procedures, but. I think there’s an element of pain management involved in it as well.
Vik’s a former Heavyweight Boxer that favored primarily organic fighting for the duration of his career (he makes clear his disdain for boxing matches where opponents bear an unearned advantage through their implants). He ended his time in the ring on a high-note, yes, but that doesn’t mean Vik walked away unscathed. Old tears in his rotator cuffs, the lingering nerve damage from a broken arm, that one rib that never healed right. Christ, his damned knees.
Chronic pain is a part of Vik’s daily life, especially as he ages. And since the Doc’s a stubborn old cuss that will probably go to his grave resisting certain chrome enhancements (Vik’ll never give up his arms, not with these sweet tattoos), he’s gotten really good at mitigating that pain. Living with it. Hell, even relishing it.
Like any old scar, pain is just another reminder of everything Vik has survived. Everything -- and everyone -- that didn’t kill him. He never wants to forget that feeling, and to be grateful for it.

@streetknown | With V, continued from here
"ah, c'mon Kid..." Viktor's tone is soft, voice rumbling like the cascade of a slow motion rockslide. He leans back on his stool to stretch out the bend of his knees, pretending his grimace is about creaking joints (and not about V herself). "...Being nice t'you isn't a hardship. Not t'me."
The ripperdoc reaches next to where V sits and fiddles with a dial on his ancient radiobox, scanning past the usual staticky station with its boxing match reviews to settle on Royal Blue Radio, and the murmuring throb of jazz turned down low. Vik nods to himself, seeming satisfied, the pinched corners of his mouth softening slightly.
"And you're not 'just' anything." He adds, lofting eyebrows daring her to state otherwise. "-- So what if you bring trouble? You think I haven't been shoveling trouble off my doorstep since before I hung up my gloves?"
Something stubborn takes up residence in the physician's expression, a mulish jut to his chin, "With everything that's happened... with Jackie, and..." Exhaling an explosive breath, Vik cuts himself off, crossing his arms over his chest in a bid not to say more than he intends, "... Well. Here's what I know. We only get so much time, V...."
If you think that Vik Vektor won’t aggressively NUTURE AND SUPPORT every single one of you like he’s your actual ‘ganic-born DAD, then you just come right over here and WATCH HIM, KIDDO
@thunderbringer sent: “ tell me we’ll be safe at least for a little while ” wonderful people supporting my newest muse | I’m here for it!
“Mh.” Vik doesn’t immediately look up from the screen displaying coprocessor specs for Thor’s implant. Satisfied, he types in the command to run diagnostics before rotating his stool and considering the big man with an unreadable expression.
“Well, nobody patrols back alleys in Watson and expects to find an Aldecaldo, that’s for sure.” The physician’s mouth quirks at the corner, a flash of his eyes over the top of his sunglasses. “--- And local law enforcement knows to give my clinic a wide berth.”
He shrugs, arms crossing over his chest. “...So. Yeah. I’d say you’re safe for now. Though you still haven’t explained why you can’t just go home to your clan.” It’s a push, but a light one. Viktor has seen enough of life to know that not all questions have easy answers.
@crtlpunk gets some mother-henning from Vik
"I swear to shit, V..." Viktor grumbles, a guttural sound -- like the crunch of tires on gravel -- rising from this throat. He means to come across as frustrated, disapproving of the merc's latest stunt in Night City. But Vik's no good at masking his concern, especially when it comes to kids like V. Jesus, he might as well be an open book with the way his frown pulls down the corners of his mouth, the doc's shoulders tightening near up to his ears as he hunches over the operating chair where V sits.
"...if you're not going to let me kit you up with some proper implants, then maybe stop taking jobs that'll get you killed, huh?" Sharp as the words are, Vik's surgi-tool is a delicate touch on V's damaged skin. The pressure of its articulating calipers seems a distant, disconnected sensation (largely thanks to the local anesthetic the physician pumped into his patient's arm before he got to work).
Glancing up with a scowl, Vik catches the flattened slug of a bullet as its extracted from V's bicep, using his free hand to drop it into the metal pan next to his work station. He focuses on drawing the edges of the wound together, needle extension of his surgi-tool stitching three neat sutures in place. "-- a little subdermal armor wouldn't go amiss, y'know."

Viktor’s got a complicated relationship when it comes to Chrome. He sells it, sure. Makes a living off it. But despite being the “Best Ripperdoc in Watson,” Vik’s lacking in significant body-mods of his own. Both hands and arms are full on 'ganic (original parts, he jokes), and his legs and skeleton are unenhanced. The Physician does have a reflex tuner implant plugged into the coprocessor for his nervous system, but in spite of the manufactured stability it offers, Vik often uses stim injectors to ensure his wrist-mounted surgical tool remains as steady as possible. His left arm is perpetually marked up by bruising from the injector needles.
Viktor’s Operating System (because, yeah, he’s got one) is a custom built deck, modded off a Fuyutsui Tinkerer MK 3 for his work as a Ripper. It's linked to specialty ocular implants with a overlay HUD for procedures and diagnostics. He uses these enhancements like tools to ensure a safe, effective install, but Vik doesn’t like to get too dependent on his own merchandise. He’d rather trust the skill of his hands and his gut, especially when it comes to healing others.
