Losing a parent at a young age affected not only how Esperanza changed but who she became. A major impacting factor of her life, her father getting shot in a gang related rivalry. Although she managed to put that anger away it didn’t mean she was fully healed of her pain. Her mask and only source of shield from this, loneliness. She might have grieve still buried beneath the surface yet her talent in hiding the emotion has helped her namesake. At that young age, Esperanza knew from here on out her childhood home would be shared with nothing but emptiness and ghosts. The voices told her ghosts were real..and they were always right. In fact, they kept her company throughout her earliest developing years.
Middle school teachers and counselors had grown increasingly wary on where exactly her mental state would lead. Some feared it would be dangerous but others took the belief that her schizophrenic ailment would never see the light of day and neither would her studies. Costing her mother another fortune to afford the therapists and proper help needed to push her through a successful academic path, Esperanza slowly began ignoring the repeated words of her former teachers and classmates. She wasn’t senile or dumb. The more and more she persisted in believing this over the years, the more she actually could believe it. Whatever voices imprisoned her mind certainly couldn’t keep her from reaching the light.

⍅BELLE DE LA CRUZ + COUSINS: As kids Esperanza and Belle were playmates since their mothers were pretty close. With Belle around Esperanza felt closer to her family then the other people she’d seen come and go in the household. No doubt after learning of her cousin’s pregnancy, Esperanza’s love only thickened into a strong web of support. She would always see Belle as more than just a cousin but a close sister.
⍅AIDEN JACOBS + FORMER FLAME: Despite the ongoing feud between the families, Aiden always managed to keep himself right in the center of the mess. His blunt carelessness for the rivalry made him just that much attractive in Esperanza’s eyes. For awhile they had encountered each other briefly during casual neighborhood events and certain family functions periodically. Esperanza was pretty obvious in the burning crush she had on him while he acted as if he knew nothing about it. Choosing to opt on instinct, Aiden asked her out to lunch. From there, the chemistry between them built over the course of a few months. Things didn’t go so well however the night after their 8 month anniversary. Aiden learned of the arranged marriage Esperanza’s father had bestowed upon her before his death. She felt obliged to follow his request in this being her father’s last legacy. But she didn’t love her fiance-to-be, her heart belonged to Aiden. The moment she realized this came too late when she returned home to find that Aiden had cleared their home. He’d found out and left. Since then, Esperanza has never been able to find someone to lock her heart like he had.
⍅LUCAS EDWARDS + BUDDY COUSINS: Lucas wasn’t always Esperanza’s favorite cousin from the beginning. From afar they’d started off pretty distant and bratty towards each other with casual jabs every function they attended. It didn’t help that Esperanza never forgot him cutting off one of her fishtail braids when she was in second grade. The incident was meant for humor on his part but Esperanza saw it with tears and a downtrodden frown. Yet they still recognized each other as family and per request of their parents began hanging out more frequently. Strange enough Lucas pleasantly surprised her with his perception on certain situations as well as his spontaneous behavior. She would call him her partner in crime but..only when he isn’t around to make fun of it.
