Pardon the possibly dumb question, I'm new here. Are spooky foreboding ghost ships just a normal thing here? Is it just, like, a tourist attraction the town set up? I'll be honest, it's a really good one!

New Kid On The Block || Rudy Solo

Location: UMWR parking lot, downtown

Trigger Warnings: None

Summary: Rudy arrives in Wicked's Rest, and quickly learns that the rumors about the town aren't all just made up for publicity.

The first thing that Rudy did after parking his beat up 2007 Corolla in the UMWR parking lot was roll down his window and take in the east coast breeze. It was warm, and slightly salty from the ocean, but it wasn’t unpleasant. In fact, he decided it was something that he could easily get used to. He was here to finally start on his new life, far away from the ghosts of his past. His parents felt that he should wait and process what happened before going off on his own, but Rudy knew that he needed to get away from the constant daily reminders of them. The park they used to hang out at in middle school, the old steel mill that they did a failed ghost hunt at, and the woods. Those fucking woods. He still felt a pit in his stomach every time he passed them, as if whatever monster took his friends was waiting for him to serve himself up as dessert.

It was nicer here; more peaceful. As he got out of his car and looked out at his new town, he was happy to find that the town itself was pretty cute, with little shops and apartment buildings lining the streets. It definitely beat the boring daily routine of small town Nebraska, where the most fun thing to do was to go fishing at the local lake. Most of the adults would gather at the one bar in town, but Rudy was too young to even do that. Meanwhile, this town already seemed as if it didn’t have a shortage of fun shops or restaurants to try. The only thing he needed now was funds, which he was desperately low on. Half of his final $20 went into his gas tank just before he got to town. 

Opening his trunk, he dug through the hastily packed garbage bags full of clothes before reaching his skateboard at the bottom. The bottom had an image of a comically fat silver tabby sitting in a cross legged pose that was reminiscent of a Buddha statue. He then hoisted up his cat carrier that was designed like a backpack and quickly secured it to his shoulders. Tito gave a few meows of protest as he was briefly jostled around, but settled pretty quickly. Unlike most cats, he loved all of the sights and sounds of a new environment, and he quickly became transfixed on all of the people and cars as they passed by. 

“What do you think, T? Wanna ride around and do a little exploring?” Rudy asked while craning his neck backwards. There was a content “mrrrp!” from the back that let him know his familiar was down to explore along with him. Rudy knew that he got lucky to have a familiar that was so easy going and down for adventures. He knew that with Tito by his side, this new town was going to shape up to be an amazing experience for both of them. 

As he skated past the different store fronts, he did notice a few shops that seemed…odd to say the least. Then again, this was a small New England town with a reputation for spooky rumours, of course some of the local businesses would lean into it. What struck him more was the murals that seemed to be boldly emblazoned on almost every building along the street. There were various different paintings, from a seaside landscape, to a worm wearing a suit and fedora, to a worm wearing…fishnets? How did that even work? Regardless, even if the art style was far from conventional Rudy could really appreciate the quality of every piece that was there. 

And then, of course, he came upon a mural of an imposing sea beast, emerging menacingly from the water. Rudy could swear as he approached it that he could smell low-tide and feel hot air coming from the wall in long puffs, as if the mural itself was breathing. He felt movement from his backpack and heard Tito let out a low growl. Clearly something had to be agitating him, he just couldn’t wrap his mind around it being a painting of all things. Then, of course, things went from bad to worse. The painting blinked. Not only that, but he could feel its eyes shift downward and size him up, as if he were its next meal. 

Thinking quickly, he turned the other direction and started off like his life depended on it. For all he knew, it very well could have. Since the ride to where he was was pleasant and downhill, that meant that his journey back would have to be all uphill. After a while, he decided it was easier to just go back on foot, looking back every few steps half expecting an angry sea beast to be chasing after him. Tito seemed more calm, but he could still feel him take short paces back and forth every now and then.

Whatever he had just experienced, it was more than a simple tourist attraction or hoax. Sure, it was possible that the wall was enchanted with some form of magic. But if that were the case, why? Maintaining a magical display that can impact people’s senses so strongly like that for so long would take an immense amount of resources, far more than could probably be justified by increased tourism. Plus, if magic were real in Wicked’s Rest, then that would mean that all of the other rumors were also likely to be true. Vampires, werewolves, any flavor of monster you could think of really. Is it possible that they were truly here, preying on the poor citizens of this town. 

He needed more information. He needed research, and quickly. Most importantly, he needed to look at everybody that he met from here on out in a much more careful light. There was no telling what kind-faced stranger could be a monster in disguise, waiting to turn him into their next meal. Just like whatever took his friends. 

He went on a deep Google rabbit hole of everything he could find about Wicked’s Rest. On the surface, it seemed just like a town that embraced its dark history and rumors, similar to Salem. But the deeper he looked, the more he found tangible evidence of something being very wrong. Police reports of mysterious disappearances, unexplainable photos that seem to have been completely scrubbed from every other corner of the internet. The longer he looked, his concern only grew more and more. Monsters, real and true monsters, had been using the townspeople for food or as playthings for decades at least. Likely much longer. 

He couldn't stand by and allow this to happen, not again. Somebody had to do something to protect the citizens of Wicked’s Rest. If it meant tracking down and investigating anyone that he thought would be suspicious, then so be it. Maybe once he honed his powers, he could use them to put a stop to those creatures himself. Hell, he clearly wasn’t the only one concerned about the possible presence of dangerous creatures among them, maybe he could investigate for other people too. While he hated the idea of charging for a service that he saw as protecting his fellow humans, he also had to admit that there would be startup costs and he was flat broke. So, he decided that he’d make it a business after all.

And thus, with zero private investigation experience whatsoever, Rudy decided there and then to launch “Enigmas Inc.”, an investigation service for any person or creature that seems just a bit too abnormal. Once his lightning powers became strong enough, he figured that he could even start charging an extermination fee. He could see it now, just like in the comics he loved to read as a kid, he'd be "ElectroMan"!

Well...the name could probably use some workshopping.

What's going to happen with you now, Rudy? I heard your time on that Netflix show is over which is kind of a shame as it would've been nice to have everyone there for the last season. Then again, I get it that it might be time for something else. So you got any new projects in the works? Also, best of wishes for the new year, hope you had a fun time celebrating it. @rvdypankcw

Rudy was laying in bed holding the other, lately their friends with benefits situation had blurred the lines, they weren't’ following the no cuddling after rule, and they were also no longer sleeping with anyone else, constantly stepping over the boundaries they set at the beginning and it didn’t phase Rudy at this point, because part of him just wanted them to himself and he knew he felt much more for them than he was leading them to believe not wanting to scare them off how much he really needed the other. He looked down not meaning to read their text but he saw the sentence ‘I’m just with my friend’ and he couldn’t help but scoff pressing a kiss to their temple holding them closer “You know, I don’t mean to laugh but you know we aren’t friends right? Because friends don’t do this kinda of thing, sorry if I”m bursting a bubble but I don’t think we’ve been just friends for awhile now.” His hand moved up their arm finger tips just mindlessly caressing their skin before sighing “Did you ever think that maybe I don’t want to be just your friend anymore.”

Rudy should have called, but his phone was out of minutes. He decided to come over unannounced because their house was unbearably hot. Their water had been turned off and the water company said it would take two days to be turned back on, and Edward got mad and broke their Ac unit and until they could afford a new one their apartment was a sauna. Wyatt was miserable and asking for one person, and that was the person’s door they were standing at right now. He knocked holding onto Wyatt’s hand hoping what he was about to ask wasn’t too much.”

Rudy rubbed the back of his neck and let out a long sigh “sorry if I seem to be on edge lately, I’ve been working so much, I didn’t mean to snap at ya.”

It had been a few days since  Jasper had arrived to town which meant it had been a few days since his first and last conversation with Rudy. He’d wanted to get settled into his new place before searching out the pawn shop, but now that things were as settled as they were going to get, he wanted to finally see it. And seeing Rudy was an appealing thought as well. He waited until the sun had set and left his place, walking towards the main road where the shop was. He hoped the place wasn’t closed already but he wouldn’t have been surprised given the time. Luckily, as he arrived, the lights were on and the door was open and he walked easily inside, his attention going to Rudy almost automatically. He was talking to a customer, or maybe only a friend, so  Jasper took the time to glance around the shop, not wanting to interrupt or pull unnecessary attention to himself. It was filled with old things, himself included, and as he slowly started to make his way around, he realized that he could spend days trying to see everything that was stocked in there. He did his best to focus on the items and not on how ridiculous and nervous he felt about actually only being there to see Rudy. He was too old to feel ridiculous or nervous.
