Zai heard the soft knock on her door and wasn’t surprised to find the other standing there, eyes already brimming with tears. This often happened when they were feeling distressed about something. Zai was always happy to help, and eager to make the other feel better. “Alright, I’ll give you options for tonight. Do you want to go on an aimless night drive, go out for late night milkshakes, or fill our faces with ice cream? Whichever decision you make, we clearly need a severe pick me up while we talk.”

“Let me through, let me through, my daughter’s in there!” she demanded at the barrier that separated the spectating public from the dangerous fire. “Please!” The woman begged. There was no amount of desperation that swayed the first-responders to let her in. And for good reason. She sat helplessly on the sidewalk, trying to breathe as she waited for things to unfold. She prayed to all the gods, surely there was one that was real who’d listen to her.

It only took Zai half the time she usually does to get from work to her daughter’s school once the news reached that there was an explosion. She probably broke a couple of laws as she practically flew the car over. But she didn’t care for that. She’d pay for all the tickets if that meant her daughter was safe.

“Mom, why do you seem so nervous?” Anya quizzed her mother as they set up the table together. “We’re having dinner with the guy who saved my life,” she pointed out, “you’re acting like you’re about to introduce me to your new boyfriend,” she teased Zai with a small smirk. To which Zai didn’t dignify with a response outside of a light chuckle. She didn’t even know what to say in the first place as Zai didn’t know why she was so nervous. Just then, she hears the doorbell ring and a smile graced her lips. She may not admit it out loud, but she was looking forward to seeing Ezekiel again even if it was just for this thank you dinner. “Let’s go greet him at the door, Anya,” she prompted placing her arm around her daughter’s shoulder. Zai opened the door, greeting the male with a smile. “Welcome to our humble home.”

Did people usually do this? Zai wasn’t sure if it was normal to come to the fire station bringing a basket full of cookies for the people who risked their life to save countless others. But the gentleman who’d saved her daughter’s life had yet to leave her mind since that day. Anya was stable now. And according to the doctor’s she was only days away from being released from the hospital. The dance instructor finally found the time to make some pastries and come to the station like she’d been meaning to. It wasn’t much. But she wanted them to know how grateful she was.

She shouldn’t have been so nervous but she was. But she was good at pretending otherwise. “Hi,” she approached the first person she saw as she entered the station. “My name is Zai Soni. Your team saved my daughter’s life. I just wanted to bring some cookies to express my gratitude and I do hope you’ll receive it.”
