C.H.E.W.
C.H.E.W., Noise Square from the In Due Time 7″ e.p. (April 24, 2020).
For Halloween 2018 I had a show booked with C.H.E.W. (the fucking homiesssss, I’ve booked em twice and would do so again in a heartbeat) at Maple Lanes that was looking to be a total freaking banger, so I decided to make it a full on Halloween party. Kid/Gaki from Konton Crasher approached me at a show and said that Boston’s VIDEO FILTH was looking for a show on the same date, so we combined the show into:
C.H.E.W/VIDEO FILTH/LACERATE/SPIKE PIT/BRAINWASHED CALIFORNIA
It was fucking epic, the first hardcore punk show at Maple Lanes, and it went fucking swimmingly. I bought a bunch of candy to put out, made jello shots (my party signature move, who doesn’t love jello shots?!) and put together a Halloween Themed Mix CD to give away. I made like 50 of the things, and had my friend Macy Franko draw up some art to go along with it. Packaged in sandwich bags, I made sure personally that they were all gone by the end of the gig. I have no idea if anyones even listened to them, they were an amalgam of Cleveland bands mixed in with whatever, alternating tracks.
Jimmy of Akron’s ZERO DEFEX was in attendance (stamping out the fireworks to ease his own PTSD which also eased the stress of ML’s resident booker Marty Brass) and was super into the CD, which was awesome. Jimmy’s a really awesome old school peace punk, and he looks like Captain Jack Sparrow, so a lot of the younger kids think he’s just fucking old and crazy, but he’s seriously the best. If you haven’t heard his band, you should.
The track list for the CD was/is as follows:
Hopefully the CD’s still exist in some people’s cars, but that’s not for me to know. It was, IMO, a killer playlist tho.
NEW MUSIC BLAST: 6 Bands for your Quarantine Playlist
CONTROL TOP
Philadelphia’s Control Top sounds like a band about to rocket into the stratosphere. Their debut last year ‘Covert Contracts‘ is a master lesson in how to play ferocious post-punk, taught by Ali Carter’s driving bass and shrieking vocals, Al Creedon’s shredding guitar, and Alex Lichtenauer’s percussive assault. The new track ‘One Good Day‘ is explosive and agitated and a perfect track…
