Those that were once human find a much easier time hiding their undeath from the public eye. After all, it’s far simpler to conjure an illusion when you have memories of your living self. However, when enough decades pass existing as a nightwalker, or if one were to embrace their new identity as a monster with rapid-pace enthusiasm, even those once mortal can begin to forget; both their true and disguised appearance become more ghoulish the more of their old selves they lose.

When you’ve never known what it felt like to be in living flesh, the barrier to imitating is not only more difficult to learn, but also to maintain the illusion of.
