To say she was terrified was an understatement. She was scared and she was trembling as she pulled the hood of her jacket over her head as she scurried into the station. Days ago she had gone missing, well run away actually, and had been hiding in an abandoned shack in the woods. Today was the first time she had been in town for awhile and she didn’t wanna go back home.
It was noisy at the station, the sounds of keyboards typing away as workers filed reports. She had briefly spoken to the secretary who told her to take a seat. As she waited, she was given a cup of hot chocolate to calm her nerves. Once she got into the Chief’s office, her lower lip trembled and she felt tears rolling down her cheeks. “I-I ran away because..my father, he beats me. I don’t wanna go back.” Her voice choked as she pulled on her sleeves. “All he does after work is drink and h-hit me and...” Mariah swallowed. “He tried to hit me with the bottle but he missed.” Pulling a tape recorder out of her pocket she shakily pressed the button. The audio played back contained a lot of screaming and yelling, the sound of glass breaking, and sobbing. She didn’t wanna go back but she also feared she was going to be put into foster care now. At least then she’d be free of him.
