Coating With Resin

Do you want your product super smooth with minimal effort? Well, use resin!

I have made a post before about resin comparisons, so I will be using the Alumilite Bar Top (Amazing Clear Cast) but any bar top coating will do for this example. I have not used XTC in this situation because it’s cost per ounce is very high and I need a food grade resin for my mug making.

You remember this mug? Well it’s time to coat and seal it!

What I didn’t take pictures of was the first layer. When you do something that is absorbent, like wood, it’s important to do a first layer to ‘presoak’ the wood with the resin. The wood will soak it up and leave dry spots. If you’re doing this with plastic, then you don’t need to worry about the first layer. There is no special preparation for woods first layer.

Step 1, gently sand the surface. The better it’s sanded the smoother it will be. You can see that the first layer is pitted with resin droops. The wood absorbed the resin unevenly and this will simply even it out. If this is a 3d printed prop this will smooth out the highest ridges and give the resin something to bite onto.

Step 2, prepare your brush. This is the cheapest chip brush I have found. I buy them in bulk and just use them until they’re useless. But, the bristles fall out often. For a resin project this causes problems.

Prepare the brush by soaking the base with thin CA glue. This will lock the bristles in place.

Make certain it’s cured by pressing onto paper and make certain it leaves no wet spot. This will also get rid of excess CA glue.

All set!

Step 3, mix your resin. This is 2tsp of resin (part A + B) which will coat the entire wooden tankard. I know this from experience. You might mix too little or too much, so if you do you need to be ready to make more, or have a second project on hand for the overflow.

Put that brush to work!

At this point, know your resin. The reason I’m using this particular resin (other than that it’s food safe) is because it’s slow curing, self degassing, and responds to heat well.

I did a post before about EZ Cast resin. It does not like heat, so it wouldn’t be good for this.

Step 4, inspect! Sometimes bristles do come off. Sometimes there are flaws still present. Take a look, find and remove them if possible. Use the brush to fill gaps as much as you can. And look at the bottom of the mug (or your 3d print), it starts to gather there. All of my resin is on the tankard, so I just use the pool at the bottom as a fresh supply and brush upwards with it. This’ll come in handy later.

Step 5, the heat gun! This does 2 things. 1) it pops bubbles. I know it’s self degassing, but bubbles come up because of the material. 2) it makes the resin flow into the tiny spots. This is generally thick, like honey. So with the heat gun it flows more so it absorbs into cracks. When you see a spot that the resin keeps flowing into, add more resin! That’s what the bottom pooling area is good for.

Stpe 6, bottom up. Gather the resin and brush up the length of the mug (or 3d print). It takes about 20 minutes for this resin to become a gel, and during that time you can brush it back onto the surface to help it pool better. If it begins to gel and you need more brushing, use the heat gun again.

Step 6: part b, top down. Using the pooled resin scrape it onto the prints highest area and allow gravity to do the work for you. Once the surface is tacky, you give it one more run with the hot air gun and then walk away.

In 8 hours it will be hard, and in 24 it will be solid!

You might want to cover the project with something to prevent dust from settling on it.

Oh, and because I’m a frugal bum that likes things to last as long as possible, I turn the mixing cup upside down so I can re-use it. The first layer brush is sitting on the table, and the second layers brush on the top. It’ll harden and there is nothing I can do about that.

If you use a different resin that cures faster you have to work within its ‘pot time’. Most resins have a listed ‘pot time’ as the time you mix and apply to the surface. After that it’s ‘curing time’ means it settles and disturbing it will cause flaws.

Bar Top coating resin isn’t a casting resin so it behaves a little differently, it likes thin layers and absorbs into materials like casting resins don’t. But, you lose fidelity when using it. Recesses and engraved details exist, but become muted when the resin flows into it.

For the above reason, this process is good for large surface areas where fine detail isn’t important.
