A traditional Southern comfort food, Southern Fried Cabbage and Bacon blends the flavorful elements of crispy bacon, soft cabbage, and fragrant onions. This is a straightforward and filling side dish that goes well with your favorite Southern dishes.
Ingredients: 1 head of cabbage, thinly sliced. 8 slices of bacon, chopped. 1 onion, finely chopped. 2 cloves garlic, minced. 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional. 2 tablespoons butter. Salt and pepper to taste.
Instructions: In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until it becomes crispy. Remove the bacon from the pan and drain on paper towels, leaving the bacon grease in the pan. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion to the bacon grease in the pan. Saut for about 5 minutes or until the onion becomes translucent. Stir in the sliced cabbage and red pepper flakes if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until the cabbage is tender and begins to brown slightly. Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, stir in the cooked bacon and butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to melt the butter and heat the bacon. Serve hot as a delicious side dish. Enjoy!
