Yon Rogg, Yonvers, and the Cabin Scene
Re-watching Captain Marvel and The Cabin Scene with Yon-Rogg and the Skrull (Fake Vers) and...let me just say that, objectively speaking, there were a lot of ways they could’ve played this moment that still would’ve conveyed the tension and drama of Yon-Rogg’s realization, but the way they did it and framed it (see this gifset here) is just really emotional for Yon-Rogg?
After the Skrull Scientist tells him “You’re too late,” he lets out a slightly shaky breath, clenches his jaw, turns around, and leaves his back open to hide his emotions. The camera follows him closely (it’s been rather close this entire scene, actually) and the slight shakes of the camera are a little more noticeable, which gives everything a more personal/hand-held feel which, in turn, emphasizes the almost claustrophobic feeling (and thwarted intimacy of their almost reunion) inside the cabin. His breathing (along with the Skrulls’ breathing, but it’s still noticeable for Yon) is even more audible here, too.
Even when he’s turned away from the camera, we can tell that he’s feeling something and that this moment is just...very personal for him. It’s not a calculating villain freezing and looking threateningly at a camera (not at first anyway). It’s more personal than that.
When he turns around to look at the Skrull and shows us his expression, it is (while not overtly emotional) definitely sad and angry—one of realization and loss—when he says “She knows.” I find it interesting that Yon doesn’t show any signs of anger at this realization until after he processes his loss. He doesn’t sound thwarted like you’d expect your typical villain might, he sounds resigned. It’s only after this moment that he shows a burst of very personal fury at the Skrull and abruptly kills him. But even then, everything he does afterward is still obviously emotionally driven? Compared to his behavior on previous missions, the way he contacts Ronan (someone we know he dislikes) and brings him in to C53 just reeks of very personal vengeance.
Also, Marvel can’t just give me line like, “It’s my blood that’s coursing through her veins...what have you done with her?” delivered LIKE THAT and expect me to believe the sharing of Kree blood doesn’t have some deep cultural significance to the Kree. On top of Ronan and his ritualistic obsession with blood, lineage, and blood feuds shown in GotG (and the Kree Empire just shrugging about it in the face of Nova Prime), you can’t tell me that little addition wasn’t significant somehow. You just can’t.
