Nightmare and Aftercare- Cable x reader
Drabble challenge: @themotherofnerd requested #136.
“Aaaahhh!!”
You woke up screaming and in a cold sweat. The sounds of gunshots still rang in your ears. Your bedroom door flew open and someone came in. Someone large.
“Y/N?”
You knew that gruff voice. “Cable?”
Your hand was shaking as you lifted it to wipe the tears that had already started to fall.
“Shit, what the fuck? I could hear you down the hall.”
Cable’s voice was a mix of demanding and concern.
“I’m fine.” You adjusted the sheets.
“The hell you are. What happened?” Cable sat on the edge of your bed.
“I said I’m fine,” you shot back.
Cable’s closeness was making you uncomfortable, though you couldn’t exactly say why.
“Anything you want to talk about?”
“Not with you,” you said unconvincingly.
You pulled your legs up. Cable moved more onto the bed.
“You had a nightmare. Tell me what it was about so I can fix it.”
You grunted and then sighed, finally allowing yourself to relax. “Fix it how?”
“Fuck, I don’t know, doll.” Cable scratched his head. “I don’t usually deal with shit like this.”
You wrapped your arms around your knees. “Do you ever have nightmares?”
Cable sighed. “Sometimes.”
“And what do you usually do?”
Cable waved his metal hand about. “Turn on a light. Dick around with my guns. Sometimes go downstairs for a drink.”
Your eyes were wanting to close now. Just listening to him talk, having him here. “I would love to try to go back to sleep. But I...” you straightened your legs out until they hit Cable’s leg.
“But what?”
You could feel his gaze on you. Should you tell him? Or would he think you were just being childish?
“I don’t think I could fall asleep alone.”
There. The truth. You sighed deeply.
“You want me to stay with you?”
That sure woke you up. “Oh...I...I guess...I don’t know.”
Cable leaned in towards you. “Darlin’...you didn’t just bring that up for nothing.”
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” you said in a breathy voice.
Cable sighed. “Come on.” He stood and patted you knee.
You stared at him. “Come on, what?”
“I can’t leave you like this.”
“Cable...”
“Cable, nothing. Let’s go,” he commanded.
You furrowed your brow and threw your covers back. You followed Cable out of your room, quietly closing your door behind you.
“Hey how did you hear me anyway?” you asked in a hushed voice. “Your room is further down the hall.”
“Had to take a piss.”
You gave a nod of understanding even though you knew Cable couldn’t see you. You followed him. Soon you neared a corner and stopped in your tracks as you neared a lamp. It had been pitch black in your room.
So you hadn’t seen that Cable was shirtless.
You slowed your steps and let Cable walk a little further ahead of you so that you could admire the view. You had always known the half metal man was jacked, but his muscles were so defined, you could see the contour of them in the lamp light.
“Fuck me,” you said under your breath.
You just wanted to run your hands up and down his back. As he passed by the lamp, you let out an audible gasp, luckily not a loud one though. Literally almost half of the left side of Cable’s torso was metal, including his spine. You had seen hints of it before from the couple of times you had seen him wearing a muscle shirt, but to actually fully see metal and flesh molded together… You felt your face flush, not exactly the first time that had happened around Cable for the several weeks you had been at the X-Mansion. Your eyes traveled down to his lose fitting pants. That ass. So round and sculpted.
Your blush intensified when Cable finally stopped.
You pointed at the open door before you. “Your room.”
“Yeah.” Cable turned to face you. “You said you didn’t want to spend the rest of the night alone. Your bed’s not exactly big enough for the two of us.”
You made a noise in your throat and then shifted your stance. You cleared your throat. “Um…sure. That’ll work. I mean, that’s really…nice of you.” You gave him a nod, not quite meeting his gaze.
“Where’d you think I was taking you, doll?” Cable asked with a gruff chuckle.
You waved your arm to the side, feeling like an idiot. “I don’t know. I wasn’t thinking I guess.”
Cable pointed to the open doorway. As you passed him, you could almost feel his body heat radiating off of him.
The room was somewhat bigger than yours. Cable walked passed you and turned on a lamp.
Guns. There were guns everywhere. On the desk. Leaning against the walls. And some pretty high tech looking gadgets as well.
You let out a laugh. “Well if anyone ever breaks into the mansion to hurt us, I know whose room I’m coming to.”
Cable grunted. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
You crossed your arms over your chest. “Please do. I always wondered where you kept all of this.”
“So you like what you see?”
You raised an eyebrow. “So far yeah.”
“Good. Maybe one day I can let you have a more…hands on approach.”
Was if just you, or had Cable’s gaze flicked up and down your body as he had said that?
You licked your lips. “Maybe,” you said coyly.
Cable cleared his throat. “Ready to go to bed?”
You stood blinking at him. He was talking about sleeping right? Sure you had been finding Cable sinfully and deliciously attractive, but the older man from the future had hardly spared you a second glance since you’d come to the mansion. Which had just made it all the more surprising that he was willing to be this nice and share his bed with you to help you fall back to sleep.
You eyed the queen-sized bed. “Which side you sleep on?”
Without hesitation, you crawled in and settled yourself under the covers on the other side. Cable went and turned off the lamp and then you felt a pressure as he crawled in. You froze but then started to relax when you saw that he was staying way on his side. You heard him sigh as he relaxed. A minute passed.
“You know you didn’t have to do this, Cable. Thank you. I appreciate it.”
“Nathan,” you whispered. You smiled, then in a normal voice said, “Thank you, Nathan.”
You turned over on your side, facing away from him. As you started to doze off, you heard him reply, “Any time, doll.”
You woke up during the middle of the night to an increasing pressure on your chest. Your eyes flew open, heart pounding. Oh there was a pressure on your chest alright.
Somehow, in his sleep, Cable had rolled over…
And was using your chest as a pillow. You heard him moan and then he started nuzzling his cheek against your breast. You stayed stock still, not that you could have moved if you’d wanted to. His metal arm was completely draped over you. And then Cable shocked you even further by wrapping it around your waist. You wanted to say his name, to wake him, but you were pretty sure you would embarrass him and you didn’t want to ruin the moment.
Somehow you managed to fall back to sleep. When you woke in the morning, Cable had already left. You got out of bed and left, closing the door quietly. Luckily no one was around, so you didn’t have to worry about looking conspicuous. You made your way to your room and threw on a light robe.
Cable and Colossus were already in the kitchen. Cable was fixing himself some coffee while Colossus was at the table eating a bowl of cereal. Cable did a double take when he saw you.
“Mornin’” Cable responded.
You grabbed a box of cereal out the cabinet. “You uh…slept good last night?”
“Pretty good.” Cable leaned back against the counter, his coffee in his hand. “You?”
You tried to hide a grin. “Pretty good.”
“You want to check out my guns today?”
You opened the box of cereal. There was no fighting the grin that spread across your face.
Cable quirked an eyebrow as he sipped his coffee. “What?”
“Nothing. I think I uh…got pretty close enough to them last night. Besides,” you shrugged, “I would probably break something anyway.”
“Give yourself some credit. You’re better than you think.”
You wanted so so badly to ask Cable about last night. But you decided to drop it for now. Besides, as much as your past still haunted you, there would probably be more nights like the last one.
You poured your cereal. “If you say so,” you said in a singsong voice.
“Get your ass moving,” Cable walked past you and you jumped as he slapped you on the ass. “I’ll see you up in my room in a few.”
Damn. This was a total turn around. From barely talking to Cable letting you share his bed with him. And wanting to hang out. You turned around. Colossus was staring at you, his spoon halfway to his mouth.
You had never eaten cereal so fast in your life.
