Excerpt of the Day:
"Delivery for Mister Francis Tanaka," he told the receptionist on duty, sending the young man the tired smile of someone who had worked long hours and was just ready to go off shift. "The information from Blue Orchid Flowers should be in your system already?"
"Yes, I have it right here," the receptionist nodded, a look of concern crossing his face as he saw the stipulations of the order that had come up on his screen. "Oh. It says here you're supposed to bring them up personally? To arrange them yourself?"
"Yeah, that's right. I mean, that's not a problem is it? My boss won't be happy if all I do is leave them with you. I hear mister Tanaka is very particular about the way he wants his hydrangeas arranged."
Looking up from his screen, Cade could see that the receptionist - Colin Poole according to his name tag - felt a certain amount of sympathy for him. More than likely, he'd been at the sharp end of demanding tenants more than once in his career and knew that Cade (or Victor Lorne as his ID named him) was at a very real risk of losing his job if he didn't do exactly what was specified on the order. Colin's gaze shifted back to the screen, then up again and past Cade toward the security guard, and then back to Cade. "Okay," he said, licking his lips and swallowing. "I really should have you escorted up by a guard, but Tom called in sick and Ellie is on duty alone..." He left the rest unsaid, and rose from his seat, giving a nod across to the woman by the door, quietly signalling her of his departure. "I'll take you up myself. If you'll follow me, please, Victor." The brief smile that followed was more than just common courtesy expected of a receptionist, and Cade responded in kind, adding a quick wink for good measure as he thanked Colin for his kindness.
Notes:
Not too shabby, though of course, about 300 of those words I wrote in bed last night on my notepad. Cade is posing as a flower delivery man to gain access to a secured building, and is flirting subtly with the receptionist, which does seem to be working, doesn’t it?
