CADMAN'S COTTAGE The Rocks, Sydney 1815 - 1816 Cadman's Cottage is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sydney. It was the first building to have been built at the Rocks. It was built on the shoreline and during high tide the water would come very close to the cottage. However, since then the building of Circular Quay, the waterline is away from the cottage since 1816. It was originally used for government and sea crew until 1816 and was then used as headquarters for water police and as a sailor's home until 1970. The cottage was restored in 1972 and can be viewed by the public. John Cadman was born in 1772 and was transported to Australia in 1797, aged 25 because he stole a horse. He was pardoned in 1821, he lived in the Cottage when he was the Superintendent of Boats, with his family until he retired in 1845, he lived there for 18 years.
