Episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett was amazing. Stunning. Beautiful. Literally everything I ever dreamed and wanted.
…..if it was the season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian.
My biggest gripe, like many people, is that Boba Fett wasn’t even in it. He is the title character. This is his show. Where is he? He got credited at the end because he showed up in the episode recap at the beginning, but that’s it. Like, okay, he got paid, but… it’s his show? He deserves more? Like absolute bare minimum would have him going with Fennec to recruit Din.
Not to mention, the production quality on this episode, in my opinion, was absolutely through the roof. Very clearly much higher quality than the previous episodes. Where were they hiding this before? Maybe the next two episodes will also be higher quality and they were saving most of their budget for the big finale, but I guess we’ll see.
Also… as much as I LOVED finding out what happened to Din after season 2 of The Mandalorian (don’t get me wrong, I will be watching this episode at least once a day until the next episode airs), was it really… necessary? To show us all of that right now?
It would have been really compelling to have Din show up to help Boba with no beskar spear, refurbished, pre-Empire Nabooian starfighter, with his little mysterious gift he wants to give Grogu, talking about how he’s no longer a Mandalorian and he wants to find the Jedi to see Grogu again. Like, what?? That’s wild. What the hell happened to this guy since we last saw him? And then go back and show that in episode 17 of The Mandalorian.
I understand if they needed to explain all of that for the next two episodes to make sense. That’s one thing. If that’s the case I’m still not exactly… thrilled about that, but I can accept it. But if they were only showing that to set up season 3 of The Mandalorian? That wasn’t necessary to put in The Book of Boba Fett. However, I’ll give that that’s something we’ll have to wait for the show to finish to find out.
And this isn’t me shitting on the episode. I absolutely LOVED the episode. Like I said, it’s exactly what I wanted to see of Din post-losing Grogu. The content was beautiful. But it felt very out of place. Like I said, maybe they needed to show that for the next two episodes to make sense but I… doubt it.
Truthfully, I’m just getting very tired with how The Book of Boba Fett has been handled. It’s so frustrating because we know the show could be better. Episode 2 proved that. But the way the writers and the production team are handling the show is very frustrating. It feels like they’re half-assing it sometimes. And the fact that we know Temuera Morrison cares so much about the character, and that he fought tooth and nail for the few things we loved in the show to appear, makes it even more frustrating.
I’m trying to stay positive about The Book of Boba Fett, because I really want to like it. There are certain things about it I do like. I’m holding out hope that the last two episodes will be as good as episode 2 and 5. But overall, with every episode, the chip in my shoulder gets bigger.
