Cage Diving with Great Whites
To top off a long week of new experiences in South Africa, I went cage diving with great white sharks. I was apprehensive about the prospect, but knew that I'd regret not having done it if I chickened out. It turned out to be an excellent adventure, and an opportunity to see sharks twice as long as I am tall, and five to eight times as massive, come within a foot of the surprisingly thin cage bars before disappearing with disturbing ease into the murk.
We saw a total of seven different sharks, most of them younger and mid-size, although there was one fully-grown adult male who was an absolute monster. These animals are pure engine and teeth, purposeful and calculating in their movements, and perfectly suited for their environment. Their stabilizer fins and powerful tail provide them a remarkable stability in the water. It was fascinating to see how they explored the potential food with numerous languid passes, before eventually deciding to make a go of it with a much more energetic approach.
No one lost any fingers or toes, although a few people lost their lunch from the constant rocking motion of the boat as the diving got underway. Concerns about the worsening weather ultimately drove the decision to head for shore a bit early, but the images and experiences were already firmly imprinted.
