The succulent annual Cakile maritima (sea rocket) is a native of European coastal sands. The seeds can be distributed by ship ballasts, sand transport, tidal movement, and other human activity and can be considered invasive.

On a sandy beach in Orkney the Cakile maritima (European sea rocket) was filling the air with scent. This succulent plant is normally an annual but it can be a perennial. In some places such as coastal California this species is considered invasive.

Just a few flowers are left on the annual plant Cakile maritima (sea rocket, strandby) which grows on sandy beaches. The flowers provide a useful source of nectar for migrating butterflies when they make landfall. The seeds are salt water resistant and dispersed by the tides.

On the sandy shoreline of the Shetland Isles were the ideal growing conditions for Cakile maritima (sea rocket). This wildflower has adapted to tolerate salt spray with waxy, thick, lobed leaves and a low growing habit to withstand the abrasive sand. In addition the plant has a long taproot.
