Thanks in large part to my favorite arachnologist Dr. Lauren Esposito I’ve been recently appointed as an official Associate in Entomology at CA Academy of Science @calacademy . If I won every art award in the world it would still pale in comparison to this great honor🙏 As a gesture of my gratitude I just made her this little 4” painting of a new species of Ghost Scorpion she found on our recent survey trip in Penang, Malaysia. 🦂 Ever since I was an artist in residency at Calacademy back in 07’ artists have been asking me how to gain access to the collections. The staff of research biologists at calacademy are all creative generous people (many hold art degrees!) who have a keen interest in sharing the collections with our community as much as possible. That said, they don’t have the bandwidth to personally unlock the cabinets and oversee each individual. So I’m hoping to form a bridge to other artists and curious makers who want to study the collections up-close. If you live in the Bay Area, mark you calendars for the evening of January 28th. We’re going to unlock the cabinets and launch ‘Unlocked Art Lab’, a monthly art night workshop @calacademy Nightlife. I’d love to help form an inspiring community of creative naturalists.
