Girls' basketball continues undefeated start

Providence Day’s girls basketball continued its undefeated start with a 63-26 win over Greensboro Day Tuesday at the MAC. PD’s ability to force turnovers, control the glass, and make open shots led the team to its fifth victory of the season.

Erin Whelan and Janelle Bailey led the way for the Chargers, scoring 32 and 20 points, respectively. Whelan’s dominance permeated the win as she was in double-figures in both halves of Tuesday’s win. Bailey, meanwhile, proved to be a force on the offensive glass, hitting three and-one layups over the course of the game.

Whalen’s brilliance shined in the third quarter, when she came down with a defensive rebound and drove coast-to-coast for an easy bucket. On a similar-looking play the following possession, she passed to an open teammate, which eventually lead to a Celine Ives layup and a 26-point lead. Providence Day held a 48-19 advantage heading into the fourth-quarter.

In the opening seconds of Tuesday’s contest, Whalen took the opening tip right to the basket, driving and hitting a layup in traffic to give the Chargers their first lead of the night with 7:56 left in the first frame. After a Greensboro Day field-goal that tied the game on the following possession, Whelan hit a wing three to give Providence Day the lead for good Tuesday night.

The Bengals played competitively with Providence Day to start, as they trailed 10-7 mid-way through three minutes of Tuesday’s contest. However, the Chargers held a 22-9 edge at the end of the first quarter and dominated from there.
