Rappers to Watch For

Every three years some online journal posts a think-piece about “What the Rap Game is Missing”. Then you have the “artists to watch for” articles that all contain the same 10 rappers that are already doing numbers. Then it be the same 10 rappers topping the charts with singles all featuring each other. This playlist contains songs by some rappers who may not top the charts this year, but they embody the spirit of rap. 

1. Caleborate- Wanna Be

Caleborate is probably one of the best rappers to come out of the East Bay in these last few years. He keeps true to the spirit of hip-hop and raps about the real. His mellow flow carries his hopeful lyrics with a percision that can’t be matched. Just last year, Caleborate was nominated as a part of XXL’s Freshman Class. In November 2017 he released his third album, Real Person.

2. Noname-All I Need (ft. Xavier Omar)

Noname is the latest rapper out of Chi-Town to make a name for herself. She has a very careful flow and spits nothing but truth. Her only album which was released in 2016 titled, Telefone leaves us all wanting more. She reminisces on growing up in the hood that gives off a type of nostalgia not usually felt through music. 

3. Noveliss- Tales of a Samurai 

Noveliss is probably one of the most slept on rappers in this setlist. He represents for all the black nerds with plenty of references to different animes and comic books. He wields the mic as his weapon and skillfully cuts down the competition. The rap scene just isn’t ready for this level of realness that shows a different side of what rap can be. His flow is refreshing and Noveliss’ 2017 album, Kenjutsu Under the Moonlight is a diamond in the rough, no doubt.

I’m still feeling very grateful for being one of the lucky few that witnessed  BØRNS’ intimate headline set at Popscene last month, which he's followed up with news of an expansive tour that would bring him to the massive Fox Theater in Oakland come mid-January, with Charlotte Cardin and Mikky Ekko in tow as huge support acts, no less. Not surprisingly, the Fox show is already sold out. Garrett Borns, the psych pop artist behind the project, is preparing for the release of his sophomore album in 2018. He recently shared a new track off Blue Madonna. I Don’t Want U Back is a sleek and dulcet injection of his signature alt pop and lush harmonic. Borns’ candied voice seems extra breathy and even Prince meets Great Good Fine OK-like on the irresistibly gooey whirring pop anthem. I Don’t Want U Back is available from iTunes, here.
