On one of my daily YouTube music trawling expeditions, I came across a stunning artist from France named joanna and the video for her latest French language single, Vénus. I was immediately struck by the ringing beauty of its haunting avant-pop and dramatic yet classy R&B pop, as well as its video’s gothic magnetism. Vénus channels shades of Sevdaliza’s dark contortion and slivers of Rosalia’s vivid pageantry. Unfortunately, especially with my lack of French comprehension, I know very little else about joanna. But a deeper dive did uncover her prior single and video, Oasis, which you can view below in all its moody smoldering splendor.  Vénus is available as a single, here.

I’m incredibly content to have chanced across this endearing bedroom concoction, albeit a little belatedly. What You Told Me is a sweetly affecting, bittersweetly stripped back ballad from kate con, who looks to be a bedroom artist out of Chicago with Filipino-American heritage. According to what she wrote on Soundcloud, What You Told Me is the very first track she’s ever uploaded to Soundcloud. Tender ukulele strums, a gentle stream of keys, and sincerely candid lyrics draw us deep into this intimate confessional. What You Told Me feels like an open book and a direct glimpse into kate con’s own heart. It’s a song that mirrors the allure of recent bedroom stars and rising acts to watch, like Clairo, beabadoobee, mxmtoon, and girl in red. kate con is easily the latest in this stream of adulated artists to entice our ears and perk our interest. She’s since followed up the Soundcloud debut with a second song named ‘we were children too’, featuring twilight electronic production, a glistering R&B pop sheen, and more vivid beats. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about kate con soon. Till then, let’s get the word out on this fantastic new discovery, because these kate con deserve some attention, stat!

As always, I’m always incredibly excited to discover alluring new talent from right here in the Bay. CLRX, a Northern California native, makes her charismatic debut with So Clean, drawing comparison to the likes of M.I.A. and MØ with the R&B pop song. Hints of Rihanna and a touch of Sia also surface on the breezy debut. CLRX’s vocally carefree edge is rooted in her free wheeling teenage years spent in the Bay Area, recklessly skating through the Tenderloin and sifting through records at Amoeba. CLRX will be hitting the 2020 festival circuit with the likes of Austin City Limits and SXSW in her sights.

22 year old Indiana native Lauren Sanderson, one of the latest DIY bedroom artists to make a growing impression in the music scene, is preparing to open for FINNEAS on his tour this fall after having gone from pretending to be her own manager to booking her first tour and recording music in her closet. New single Hotel Room is her first offering from a forthcoming debut album entitled Midwest Kids Can Make It Big. She’s prepared to prove its title true with her smoky, sultry voice and her vulnerable pop, which resonates with relatable yet personal lyrics. On Hotel Room, she romanticizes about one last night with a past love that just didn’t work. It doesn’t take long into the song to notice her star power and exceptional magnetism.
