AT THE time, the advice had seemed exceptionally helpful, but now, Erestor doubted that Elrohir was actually serious. ‘I don’t know,’ the younger twin had said, ‘a small animal is sure to woo him.’
Finding a small animal was not difficult. Many Elves in Rivendell were fond of keeping pets, which were easily bought from a nearby Mannish settlement that bred the, or, in some cases, found in the Wild, but Erestor quickly decided that the former was a far more practical way of locating a kitten than waiting for one to appear in the nearby forest. Its fur was mostly white, though there were patches of black around its ears, paws, and tail, and Erestor hadn’t the FAINTEST CLUE whether it was male or female. Either way, it was small enough to fit in the palm of his hand twice over, and in the two short days he’d had it, it had spent the majority of its time sleeping in his pocket.
He stood in front of the door to Elladan’s quarters, holding in his hands the cat in a small, ribbonned box with several holes in the top. Three KNOCKS sounded on the door. Erestor suddenly thought the whole idea rather ridiculous, and he tsked at himself for not thinking about the fact that Elrohir might have been joking. It had been such a terribly long time since Erestor had any reason to give courting gifts, and so far, he’d only given mundane things, like books and flowers. If Elladan did not want the kitten, it would not be so bad; Erestor had grown quite FOND of the little thing, but the prospect of such embarrassment was terrifying.
