What is the life of a Men but a fleeting whisper in the life of an elf? I know that I, compared to you and your family am finite.
Long ago, when I was taken in and accepted as one of your own, I did not understand why you were so different from me and yet so alike. Why I grew differently, or why I broke limbs more and became sick while cold weather never seemed to affect any of you.
And yet, despite my mortal weaknesses, you were there for me all that time. You often played pranks with me, fooling me into believing that the river would drown anyone that had no elf-blood, or that a certain tree enjoyed capturing little boys. But now I smile at those memories and treasure them.
You were perhaps silly, but you have learned me the basics of the wild as well, another thing I am grateful for. I recall the days in which we were shooting arrows, or when you would tackle me during sword-practice. I recall those days and I cherish them, my dear brother.
For now, I have come to old age and we see each other less and less. You have duties and I have my own, plus traveling has become harder on me. So I wrote this letter and send a messenger ahead with this. By the time it arrives, I fear I shall no longer walk the streets of Gondor, I am sorry that I waited so long. For if there was one i wanted to see again, it would be you.
To thank you for all you have learned me, for bringing joy to me when I felt blue and for not killing me when I married your sister.
You, Elrohir, are the treasure in my memories, the brother that stood there when I needed to turn to someone. You followed me to the Paths of the Dead, you followed to the Black Gate of Mordor, and I could not thank you enough for everything.
