Ms Chapman: This government stopped collecting data on school sizes. For Pete’s sake, why? Is it possible that this government feels ashamed of their actions, like a toddler who knows he’s done a terrible thing and runs to hide under his blankie to avoid the consequences of his decision? Of course, the worst the toddler likely did was break a vase, not a public education system that serves over 700,000 students.

Ms Chapman: Historic investments: I’m just going to start there because that was kind of how the minister closed out, and that phrase has just been ping-ponging around in my brain since then. I’m not sure I consider it historic to underfund public education. I think that’s something we’ve seen Conservative governments do, really, over the last 20 years in Alberta, certainly for the time that I’ve been paying attention to public education. There’s nothing historic about not funding our education system to keep pace with population growth and inflation. It’s actually kind of the standard for Conservative governments.

Ms Chapman: Given that in 2023 the NDP put forward a private member’s bill, Bill 202, that asked the government to return to collecting and publicly reporting data on class size and complexity and given that this government responded to the bill by saying that it “introduces burdensome reporting mechanisms that threaten to divert precious resources away from the core of our educational mission,” will the minister pinpoint for Albertans the exact moment he realized voting down Bill 202 was a huge mistake?
Mr. Nicolaides: Mr. Speaker, Albertans are interested in moving forward, not rehashing the past to try and score political points.

Ms Chapman: This isn’t an issue for Alberta, but I thought it was interesting, which is why I noted it down. At two degrees warming more than 70 per cent of Earth’s coastline will see sea levels rise by .2 metres. When you think about .2 metres – I still think in feet. Huh. What is that, like, two-thirds of a foot?
Member Irwin: Dude, you’re asking the wrong guy. Ask the doctor.
Ms Chapman: You were the teacher, though. Okay. Anyways, it seems like a small number, but in terms of the impact it can have on coastal flooding, beach erosion, and salinization of the water supply – and that’s one of the big risks. Did you secretly do the math there and then just not tell me?
Member Irwin: You’re right. You’re right.
Ms Chapman: Yeah. Okay. Good.

Ms Chapman: One thing I noticed was that one of the first lines of argument that was offered up by the bill sponsor was the Constitution, and the bill sponsor waxed poetic for quite some time about the glory days gone by when the Governor General was able to exercise the powers of reservation. Oh, to go back to the glory days before 1878. Apparently, in the years before 1878 it was common for the Governor General to intervene to use these powers of reservation and disallowance of federal legislation. It was a little bit weird for me – I’m going to be honest – to wax poetic about a time when we were a British colony and the Crown would intervene in the Legislature, but you know what? It’s not 1870 anymore. It’s 2023, and here in 2023 we . . .
An Hon. Member: It’s 2024.
Ms Chapman: It’s a good thing we don’t have to write cheques anymore, right? It is 2024.

Ms Chapman: I’ve just got a little bit of time, so I want to end with this anecdote. This past weekend I had the great pleasure of attending the Alberta Debate and Speech Association provincials with my lovely daughter, and I had so many great conversations with the youth in attendance. These are people who want to sit here in these seats, like we do, one day, and they want to debate bills just like this one. When we were talking about debate strategies, a common refrain that came up this weekend was reasonable limits. One of the motions up for debate was to set age limits for politicians. If you ever want a hearty dose of humility, I highly recommend judging a debate discussing the mental capacity of elected officials by a group of teenagers.
