Ms Ganley: Mr. Speaker, they say they are bringing these in to make things more orderly because we had to sit for so long last time. It was six weeks. I mean, really, apparently this government considers doing their jobs a deep inconvenience to their lives. Six weeks: it’s nothing. And they brought in a bill because, again, they hadn’t done their jobs. They hadn’t gotten it drafted. They introduced it the Thursday before that last week, so that bill was before the House for three days. That’s how long we got to debate it. Not even. Two and a half days, basically. And that was a bill that slanted the playing field in favour of a separatist referendum that took rights away from other Albertans trying to have their referendum heard, that gave the Minister of Justice immunity from behaving unethically, and much, much more.

I don’t want to belabour this point, but, Mr. Speaker, this is a government that fundamentally are trying to hide their actions from the public because they are embarrassed of their behaviour, as well they should be, and they want to limit debate. They want to have absolute power. They don’t want to have to hear from the legislative branch. They don’t want to have to hear from the judicial branch. They feel that they should get to rule as queens, and that is totally inappropriate. Checks and balances exist in our system for a reason.

Ms Ganley: The government did a survey on pensions and, boy, were Albertans resoundingly, like, not into it. But the government resisted sending out that information, I think in part because some very strong language was used. Mr. Speaker, I have to say that when we did town halls on that issue, I was very surprised by the colourful language coming from some very elderly ladies with respect to the government’s moves on CPP.

Ms Ganley: The supporters of the separatist petitions, the ones the Justice minister changed the law for to allow it to go forward even though it’s unconstitutional, have admitted to meeting with U.S. administration, the same groups who are suspected of spreading the misinformation. Why is this government actively working to support a petition knowing that foreign misinformation is spreading about this issue?

Mr. Schow: I think the members of the government caucus have been very clear, along with the Premier, that we’re letting the process play out. We’re relying upon people within the public to spread the message that they feel is important to them,

Ms Ganley: This bill is one in a long series of bills very slowly implementing a provincial police force. I’m not sure which one it is now: six, seven, something like that, Mr. Speaker. It’s like the minister is trying to sneak attack Albertans. It’s like he thought to himself: maybe if I move very, very slowly, no one will notice that I did the thing they didn’t want. But it’s, like, Hamburglar-level bad. Does anyone remember that? The McDonald’s character that used to always be, like, badly sneaking and stealing cheeseburgers? That’s what this bill feels like. This minister has been implementing this in slow stages without admitting that he’s implementing it for years now – he really ought to get himself a Hamburglar costume – and Albertans continue to oppose it despite the government’s best efforts.

Ms Ganley: Take a city like Medicine Hat or a city like Lethbridge. They could potentially carve Lethbridge into four ridings, drawing urban and rural together.

An Hon. Member: That’s a great idea. Come on.

Ms Ganley: Oh, they’re heckling that that’s a great idea. The reason they think, Mr. Chair, it’s a great idea is because they don’t want the people of Lethbridge to have a voice. They don’t want the people of Lethbridge to be able to send a representative to this place. They want the voices of the people of Lethbridge to be diluted by other communities. I think that’s unfair. I mean, it’s surprising to me that they’d actually say that right in here, but here we are anyway. Normally when one is doing something embarrassing and arguably counter to all normal ethics and democracy, one would be embarrassed, but apparently they’re not.

Ms Ganley: The current gift limit, Madam Speaker, is $200. Two hundred dollars is – I don’t know – a pretty pricey gift. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t think that $200 is an unreasonable limit. But the UCP feel that this is insufficient, that it needs to be removed so that their MLAs can receive gifts that are higher than $200. Now, they tend to shout at us about things like hockey games and specialty boxes at the Stampede. I don’t actually consider it a great imposition on me that I’m not permitted to take those gifts. I think it’s okay for an independent body to place those restrictions.

Mr. Schow: Because they never wanted to meet with you.

Ms Ganley: You know, the member can yell that they want to meet with me all he wants. I’m perfectly capable of meeting with my stakeholders outside of that. I don’t have to accept their invitation. In fact, what I did when I received invitations from energy companies to attend those sorts of events is I set up a meeting.

Mr. Schow: That’s why you’re over there.

Ms Ganley: I set up a meeting to hear their concerns and to listen to them. You know, the hon. Government House Leader can yell at me all he wants. It is not required that I accept their free drinks in order to listen to the concerns of stakeholders. I am perfectly capable of performing that function without taking gifts over $200.

Ms Ganley: Honestly, at this point, having sat here and watched this government for nearly four years, I think I can say, Madam Speaker, that the point is the suffering. It isn’t the fiscal responsibility, it isn’t the savings in the budget; it is the pain that they cause.

Madam Speaker, I really think that this evidence can lead us only to one conclusion, that this UCP government is a government that thinks that poverty is a moral failing, and it is incredibly problematic. It shows in every action. It shows in everything they do. To hear the minister comment on how these punishing decisions, that have hurt the people of this province, that have let them down in a time of crisis while this government hands out and gambles with billions of people’s dollars – it’s flabbergasting. It really, really is.

Ms Ganley: I think there are a lot of concerns in Bill 81, probably more than can be covered in the time allotted to us. Now, the first concern, obviously, and one of the biggest to me, is the idea of allowing people to buy memberships for others. I think that’s a pretty bold position for a government to take while their leader is under investigation for, I mean, exactly those allegations.
