Cali-Based Olly Shares About Vision, Production, Strategy & More [Exclusive]
Olly’s creative bass heavy sound stands out from the crowd. Many remixes only tap into small changes in the original they are editing, not for Olly. His remix of Tascione & TYNVN’s “Deeper Love” showcases his above and beyond style in terms of what they put into their productions. With that said, we sat down with Olly to talk about production, strategy, vision, and more.

Where does your sense of branding come from?
I actually just changed my logo from a distorted font to something that’s a lot more basic. I look at artists like Nghtmre, Slander, Klaxx, and RL Grime’s branding (who are easily some of my biggest influences), and their branding is not insanely flashy. I feel that while branding is a big part of one’s artistry, minimalism is key.
What were you doing musically before Olly?
Nothing actually. I had played strings and brass growing up and tried to learn piano, but that’s about it. I had always been interested in learning music theory, so I took a few classes throughout college, but I haven’t had a serious musical background.
What is the overall vision of Olly?
I originally was super inspired by artists like Quix and Graves, so gearing towards that experimental scene was big for me. But with how heavy the dubstep scene is here in OC/LA, I have taken a big interest in producing that. I would classify my style currently as hybrid trap. I am still super new to the game, so learning the in’s and out’s are still strong in my production, but I’m having so much fun.
How did you come up with the idea for “Tascione & TYNVN – Deeper Love (Olly Remix)”?
Vince (Tascione) has been another big influence of mine lately. I’ve watched a ton of his serum tutorials w/ cymatics and his production is just really clean. When I heard this track, it easily had been on my most played playlist for awhile. My buddy AJ and his homie Max (Klaxx), have been cranking out dope remixes of current/older tracks and have been killing it with them. I have been pretty inspired by them in the sense of remixing tracks and feel that as an up and coming producer, having good remixes are beneficial because it gives you more of an audience, and then originals just come so naturally.
Can you note any dance music trends that are more West Coast (compared to east coast)?
I would say the bass scene is pretty heavy on the west coast/mid-west. I haven’t gotten the opportunity to travel to the east coast yet, but hopefully, music will take me there soon. Here in California and states like Colorado, Nevada and Arizona are heavily bass influenced, so it’s great that I get to live in an area where I’m exposed to it a lot.
Do you have a side hustle?
I work at Apple right now and it’s really fun. I get to talk to people all day and am one of the “go-to” people for any music based questions people have. I’ve done a few workshops for people on garage band, which isn’t what I use to produce, but it’s cool that I get to incorporate my passion for music with my work.
What’s the plan for the rest of 2017?
I recently got a manager, and just within this last month and all his support, I’ve done a full 360. I’ve made so many connections with him by my side and have been more inspired than I was just a few months ago. I recently got the opportunity to play with Quix at Bar Ellipsis, Exchange LA with the Space Yacht crew, and have some awesome shows/festivals coming up. I recently graduated from college last month, so with that being said I plan to grind more and harder this year, so next year can be huge.
