The Book
Anybody with a deep (and/or prurient) interest in the making of the 1979 film Caligula owes it to themselves to read a book called Ultimate Porno by PierNico Solinas. It’s not really for the fans of the film’s stars: as Caligula‘s First Assistant Director, Solinas mostly worked with the extras and rarely mentions the leading actors. But for those wanting to know what it was like on the set while the stars were relaxing in their trailers or villas, it offers a level of candid detail unprecedented in any book of its kind. I can only say that the goings-on are beyond your wildest imaginings and rival the sex and violence you see on the screen. An extra bonus is that, published in 1981, it tells the story as it happened, with no attempt to soften or prettify either the events or the language. It’s a rare out-of-print book that costs upwards of $100 to buy used, but a pdf copy is available to read at the link below. Definitely not for minors!
