5. Character you love to hate.

so as a rule, supernatural villains suck shit. the most compelling villains tend to be the sympathetic ones, because they have the most personality. bigger gunnism runs rampant so most villains are like. here's a really strong guy who wants to murder people. he has the exact same vaguely-queercoded-but-not-in-an-interesting-way affect as every other bad guy on supernatural. they're all the same and nothing about them is interesting.

some of my favorite season plot resolutions are the ones where it like. Isn't That. season eleven, where they resolve things with family therapy, is a favorite, obviously. but i'm also into seasons four, six, and fourteen, where it's about interpersonal issues between the mains such that one of them becomes the antagonist, functionally. but i also love season nine's resolution, because while that has the more traditional structure of Fighting A Bad Guy, the war in season nine is fought in the hearts and minds of the people, which is way more compelling to me than just a bigger gunism. so i think metatron is a strong contender for this because he's one of the most compelling straight up villains, because his weapon of choice is angel politics, not violence, and cas ends up meeting him in kind instead of like. eating purgatory again.

i also love dick roman, for the much less intellectual reason that his actor played him really creepyslimey in a way that just slapped, and also the dick jokes were funny. however, neither of them win the title. because the true most exquisitely and hysterically hateable character in supernatural is, of course,

KETCH

he pretended to be his own twin.
