🔸️Calligrafikas Tips🔸️ . If you want to try gouache but you're thinking you have a lot of watercolors lying around, then try adding a white gouache or poster color to your watercolor mixes. It will make the paint opaque and will have the same consistency as gouache. . Or if you have poster color, then try that first. Poster color is almost the same as gouache, it's just that the poster color's pigment are more course but to be honest sometimes you won't see the difference between the two. . You can use any kind of paper for gouache, it's not that important unlike in watercolors. That's why I use the paper that I dislike for watercolor use and just use them for my gouache paintings. . One of the dreaded mistakes of newbies is loosing the white space in roses. I guess often times when you are painting and getting into the zone, you just want to make brushstrokes without minding your tonal values. You started out right then loosing yourself too much, later on to realize that you created a huge blob instead of a rose. I suggest that whenever you try to paint a rose have a real photo reference with you so that you can check the curves, the shadows, the highlights & the midtones if all are present. It will take some time for others to figure this out but it's not so difficult to achieve it. If you practice this everyday, you will have the habit of checking your shapes & your tonal value. 🔶️Calligrafikas Tips🔶️ When painting wet on wet it is very important to choose your paper wisely, if you feel that you paint with a lot of moisture definitely choose a sturdy paper like 100% cotton on 300gsm-above. You can still use a student grade paper of 200gsm but you will need to adjust the amount of moisture you put on your paper. A lot of times I started with water wash, put a light pigment on then with almost a dry mixture meaning not too many water in your brush you put that as a second layer more on defining the shapes. In using an angular brush, definitely a lot will find it hard to use, but the trick is to change the angle often. By making marks with a light wash of paint then dropping in some pigmented colors without blending or touching again what you marked, just allowing the pigment to bleed into your light wash, it can create interesting tonal value in your painting.
