ALSO just curious, why do you like leah? I dont dislike her, but the way she acted about arizona was annoying. like, she acted like arizona was hers and like she wasnt still married to callie. idk I just thought it was super immature.
~posting because you’re the 5th person to ask and i feel like there might be more?~:i think it’s really interesting that you have mixed feelings about leah for those reasons because the majority of fandom distaste i’ve seen aimed towards her has tended to have at the helm vehement callie x arizona shippers (i’m not attempting to generalise the actions of an entire fan base), mostly because it’s easier to project partly territorial (get your hands off my [woman’s] woman!!!) bitterness about your favourite couple not being together towards a scapegoat character that vaguely (hardly) comes between them for a time, regardless of her personality.
these are all things i see in leah. she cares beyond what is necessarily appropriate for her patients, and she cares for the people who notice her for even just a second…she can have a bite to her words but this is superficial, part of that aforementioned defense mechanism… because at the end of the day she cannot help but get invested. and it is that investment and tendency to be led by the heart that translates into those acts of 'immaturity'. plus i have to say that i do enjoy the character that fights for what they want, regardless of the boundaries standing in their way. shoot me for that, but sometimes it’s refreshing to see a person stand up and have strength of will and conviction, especially on a show like grey’s where words such as “hope” seem starkly out of place. but to me the most beautiful and honest and all-telling moment for leah thus far has been her words to arizona the bar in 10x05:
"it was the first time i felt like i found someone around here that got me"
i don’t think it can be denied that leah is in many ways an entirely relatable character… obviously i’m biased but out of all of the new interns i feel that this is certainly the case more so for her than anyone else. struggling to find oneself, having friends but still feeling like you’re alone and wanting something more… some connection that is always seemingly out of reach, and the desire to be something to someone who can provide for you these things, and clinging to the person who shows the slightest interest (holla at arizona) because they might just be the one. basically, she’s a lil babe i see SO MUCH worth investing in and i’m really excited to see where she goes from here.
***also importantly, i think a big part of my appreciation for leah is that i see so much of baby callie in her… and i don’t think i need to tell you how i feel about callie. they’ve both started off as the type of character i described at the beginning of this post. the difference is that callie has had almost 8 seasons to grow and find her “people” and learn that being the black sheep isn’t something that will last forever or always play against her, and that being in love with a person is different to being in love with the theory of love, and that she is worth more as a strong and independent person than settling for being with a person that loves her merely conditionally or is with her out of conveniency, and it’s a shame that she may not be able to receive the same length of time that callie has been granted in order to reach similar conclusions****
(in my dreams leah goes into ortho and they develop the most incredible student-mentor relationship but yall, i also dream of an episode in which mark and callie and arizona comically fight over which prestigious school sofia attends so i think we can agree that there might be disparity between my hopes and my realities when it comes to this bloody show)
