Elephants pass through hotel built upon ancient elephant path, Mfuwe Lodge, Zambia.

The herd matriarch has been named Wonky Tusk for obvious reasons. Elephant use of the path had ceased due to the human buildings, but she courageously resumed the use of the path a little over a decade ago, proving it safe and convincing her herd to follow. Her son was born on the property in 2009 and first visited the lodge at two days old; having grown up experiencing the route he is the most comfortable with the situation, and occasionally steals a trinket from the front desk on his way by. Wonky Tusk is a grandmother now, so it seems likely that this practice of traveling through the lobby to access the fruit trees on the other side will continue as a family tradition, as it is all some of them have known, from infancy through parenthood. They show up once a year, around early November, when the fruit ripens, and visit the trees most days for four to six weeks. The elephants are calm and relaxed, for the most part ignoring the people completely, to the point of taking the occasional nap.
