Thanks for answering Jen. The police have said it was suicide and they're not treating it as suspicious or anything so. We'd never actually met so I can't even go to his family and tell them how sorry I am or get any information or anything. I've just constantly felt sick for the past week since I found out and my mind hasn't stopped racing. I just don't know what to do with myself and I know I hadn't spoke to him for like 10 months but now it's real idk what to do. -calum anon
Hi love, sorry for the late response.
I actually looked it up and read news articles about what happened. There seems to be a facebook page in his memory that is run by his brother. You could always contact his brother on there or leave a comment on there expressing your condolences. You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but if you think it might help you feel a bit better, I think you should give it a try.
During this hard time, I think it would really help you to have the support of friends and loved ones. Trying to get through dark times like these alone makes it ten times harder than it has to be. Can you talk to any of your friends or family about this? Can you lean on them for support?
Have you tried channeling your grief into something creative? Like journaling about how you’re feeling or writing. If you’re good at drawing, channel your grief into your drawing. What about making something in his memory? Like if he was really into video games maybe you could draw a character from that video game. Or you could create something for you to always remember him by. Maybe you could join an organization in his honor. I’m not sure where you’re from, but here in America we have what is known as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. They do a lot of walks in honor of those that have died from suicide and to help raise money for suicide prevention. I’ve actually done a few of the walks in memory of my friend Nick who killed himself a few years ago. I’d definitely recommend it: I find it very healing. All of those things and more could help you channel your grief into something productive, which may help you feel better.
What about joining a support group with other people who have lost a loved one? You could join a support group in your area or online. For some people, talking about their loved one and sharing memories about them helps them cope with their grief. For other people, it doesn’t help and makes things worse. You have to find which technique works the best for you! Here are some links that I think can help you:
http://www.helpguide.org/articles/grief-loss/coping-with-grief-and-loss.htm
http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/conditions/coping-loss-bereavement-and-grief
http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/grief.aspx
I think it would also really help you to read some books about grieving and how to cope. I don’t have any specific recommendations for you, but I know that reading help books about things really helps me. You could check your local library for some books you could rent, or maybe buy some for cheap on Amazon.
Lastly, make sure to take care of yourself, love. Do what you need to do to help yourself feel better. If that’s taking off a few days from school / work to help you cope with this, do it. If that’s taking a mini vacation to try and unwind and get your mind off of things, do it. Calum would’ve wanted that for you.
Hope this helps,
<3 Jen
