When me and Wyatt started dating I realized I was always touching him in some way either that be holding his hand, having a hand on his back.
I knew Wyatt noticed it but he never moved away or seemed to mind it.
Wyatt was sitting on the couch with a blanket on lap scrolling on his phone, when I sat down next to him.
I draped my leg over his, laying my head on his shoulder.
Without even looking, my hand found his arm, fingers loosely wrapped around his bicep.
Wyatt glanced down at me.
“You okay, baby?” he asks.
I nod. “Yup.”
My finger starts tracing random shapes on his arm.
After that it became a pattern.
My hands were laced through his, my arm around his waist, playing with the ends of his hair.
I usually didn’t even realize I was doing it most of the time.
A couple nights ago we were out with the team for a dinner. I was talking to one of the other WAGs from across the table and I placed my hand on Wyatt’s thigh, thumb moving up and down.
In the corner of my eye I saw him look down at my hand and then back up at my face with a soften expression.
We were walking together, hands intertwined, when Wyatt gently slips his hand out of mine.
It only took about five seconds before my fingers were lacing with his again.
Wyatt lets out a low laugh. “You didn’t even notice.”
“What?” I glance up at him.
“You didn’t notice me letting your hand go.”
“Sorry.” I blink a small blush flooding my cheeks, then squeezing his hand tighter.
“Don’t be,” Wyatt said quickly.
Later that night, I was curled up against Wyatt on the couch, my hand resting over his chest, feeling the soft cotton of his shirt.
“You’re very clingy,” he teases.
I froze, slowly pulling away. “I’m sorry. Is it annoying?”
Wyatt sits up slightly, his hand coming up to stop me.
“Hey. Woah. Not even a little.”
I search his face for a second. “I don’t know…I just like being close to you.”
Wyatt smiles.
“It’s ok. I love it,” he says, nudging me back onto his chest.
Wyatt was already under the covers, sitting up against the headboard waiting for me.
When I lay down beside him I loosely hook my leg over his. One of my hands finds his arms and curling my fingers around his bicep.
Wyatt glances down at me. “Hi.”
“Hi,” I mumble back as he places a kiss on my head.
A few minutes later I shift, getting more comfortable, my head now settling on his chest.
Wyatts arm wraps around me automatically, pulling me closer.
For a while, neither of us say anything.
My eyes starts to get heavy and my breathing starts to slow down.
Wyatt’s hand comes up and gently brushes a strand of hair away from my face, holding me a little bit closer.
And when I shift closer in the middle of the night.
There are only two ways to describe Dallas weather: hot and unpredictable. The summer is long; you always thought people were joking when they told you the summer was much of the year, even if you had been here much of your life. The sun is bright, the humidity is low, and it's a dry heat that makes even the walk from your car into your and Wyatt’s shared house miserable.
On the other hand, the weather is unpredictable. A blue sunny sky can quickly fill with clouds and thunder, making the windows shake. In the same instance, a storm can blow through, and the sun returns just as fast, leaving very little evidence that it ever disappeared.
You knew the moment the sky shifted, it was a thunderstorm; what was once a partly cloudy day had filled with storm clouds faster than you had expected. You weren’t exactly the biggest fan of storms; you had been through your fair share of severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches, and tornado warnings. As someone who has lived in Texas for so long, you shouldn’t bat an eye at the impending storm; you should be going on about your day as if nothing was changing, but it was, and fast.
The first clash of thunder wasn’t that loud, but enough to startle you as you stood in the kitchen attempting to start dinner for you and Wyatt, wanting to surprise him since he had been at the rink most of the day working out and practicing. You sighed as you glanced out the window, rain beginning to hit as the wind blew. The storm was only starting, but you only hoped it was a fast one that was gone as soon as it began.
The next clash of thunder was louder, followed by lightning cracking across the sky. Your hands shook as you laid the knife down, moving to turn the TV to the local news. “A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Dallas County until 4:45 PM,” the words from the meteorologist echoed out throughout the house.
Your eyes felt glued to the radar on the screen, hoping that by some chance the storm would change paths and avoid your area altogether. However, as the thunder grew louder and the wind blew harder, you knew that wasn’t the case.
Wyatt also knew that wasn’t the case as he pulled out of the parking garage, only to be met by the darkening sky. He also knew how much you hated storms, so he rushed to get home. The rain was only beginning to fall harder as he made it inside through the garage, and he was met with the sound of the TV, which told him you were watching the weather.
Your head barely turned to acknowledge Wyatt before it was back to the TV again, wanting to ensure nothing had changed. A louder boom of thunder caused you to jump as the lights flickered. You hated how much you hated storms; you always felt like it was a bother, even if Wyatt always reminded you that it wasn’t.
“Come here, baby,” Wyatt said softly, not wanting to startle you as he moved to sit down. He pulled you against him, making your head rest on his chest, one hand moving to stroke your hair. “You’re safe right here, it’s almost gone. 15 more minutes left in the warning.” He whispered, kissing your head as he watched the radar on the TV before glancing back down to ensure you were okay.
“Sorry. It came out of nowhere.” You tried to apologize for the storm as if you had any control over it. “Thought it was gonna pass over faster.” You sighed as your arms wrapped around him, cuddling into his chest. It was one of your favorite places to be; the way Wyatt made you feel was sometimes hard to explain, but, simply put, you felt safe.
Wyatt chuckled as you spoke, shifting to ensure you stayed comfortably pressed against him. “You had no control over this; the Dallas weather just likes to throw surprises, especially this time of year.” He had quickly gotten used to the weather in his four years there, but even so, the storms always threw him for a surprise. “Ten more minutes.” He added, checking the time, knowing the severe thunderstorm warning was almost over, the sky also didn’t look as dark anymore.
“Remember the day we got caught in a rain storm with my top down?” He asked. “I thought that was going to be our third and final date all in the same.” He shook his head as he reflected, trying to find ways to pass the time and keep your mind off everything outside.
A simple nod came from you before you laughed. “It took hours for my dress to dry that night.” You said remembering the date well, it had been your and Wyatt’s third date. A picnic at the botanical gardens, which had been wonderful until you got ready to leave. A partly cloudy day had led to a couple of pop-up rain showers, which you and Wyatt got caught in, with the top of his bronco down, leaving you both soaked. You had both laughed it off, though Wyatt had apologized profusely.
“Five more minutes.” Wyatt hummed as he let you finish talking. He had never admitted it, but that date had been one of his favorites. The way you had been so excited about all the different flowers, and even educating him on some of them. His hand ran through your hair slowly as he kissed your head once more. It was something he did often, a comfort in a sense to let you know he was right there.
You shifted slightly, raising up, noticing the streaks of the sun already starting to break through the clouds. You had barely noticed the last few minutes of the storm thanks to Wyatt talking. You looked up at him, leaning up to press your lips onto his. “Thank you for always making me feel safe.”
Wyatt smiled into the kiss, giving your waist a gentle squeeze. “There is nothing else I would rather do.”

American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Stars. The poster on the side of the building was large, displaying four familiar faces, a nod to the Stars' playoff run. You paused, taking the time to soak it in, your first playoff game as Wyatt’s girlfriend. The green fringe jacket hanging off your shoulders was just another reminder that everyone would finally know Wyatt was taken.
The two of you had been together for almost a year, a year that sometimes didn’t feel real. The secret taps of his stick at warm-ups, the subtle ways Wyatt glanced to the stands to spot you, the texts before a game day nap, watching him practice like you were just another fan. All of that was going to change tonight.
“Y/N are you coming?” You were snapped from your thoughts as you heard Jamie’s wife call for you. You had been standing staring at the large poster on the building, lost in your own thoughts, not realizing the rest of the girls had started to head inside.
You nodded and hurried to catch up to everyone. The other girls were lovely; you had gotten to know them over the last year. A comfort in knowing they all struggled when their husband or boyfriend left for long road trips. “It’s so much busier tonight.” You commented as you took your pass from security. It was routine at this point; you went through security and then down to below ice level, or to the glass to watch warm-ups. Tonight was the latter, warm-ups first, the entire front section on one side having been saved for the families of the players.
You pulled your jacket around you a little more as you walked down the stairs toward the glass. The arena was already filling up, seas of green jerseys everywhere, quite a few of them being Johnston jerseys. Seeing Wyatt’s jerseys always made you smile; you knew the fans loved him in Dallas and how much he loved it there.
“Is it always this busy during playoffs?” You asked whoever would answer. You were pressed between a couple of the girls near the end of the aisle, wanting to ensure the girls with kids had the most space. You had never experienced playoff hockey in person. You had watched on TV, but this was a new environment, and you felt excited but nervous.
Your eyes shifted to the ice as you heard the all too familiar announcement to welcome the stars to the ice. Your phone was out, ready to capture some photos for your memories. It was a tradition at this point to take a couple of photos during each game of Wyatt during warmups.
Wyatt was always second to come out; you knew this like the back of your hand by this point. A single puck was taken off the stack as he headed toward the goal and then around the ice. You had watched this countless times during the season, and it never changed, unless Thomas was out and their routine did not happen. However, for the playoffs, that was not the case; things were normal.
Well, normal until you saw Wyatt lock eyes with you. A grin plastered across his face, he hadn’t seen your WAG jacket before he left your shared apartment, so this was a first for him. His name is embroidered on the top left, and his number on the lower pocket. You moved to give him a small wave, but that wasn’t enough for him. You giggled as Wyatt jumped at the glass in front of you before he turned to face you, the same grin still on his face.
You moved your hand to rest on the glass for a second, just taking a moment to smile at him. “Love you!” you mouthed, knowing he could hopefully read your lips. A nod of his head and mouthing the words back told you he had. You felt your cheeks turning red as he tossed a puck over and passed you a wink before he skated away. Wyatt had gotten you pucks throughout the season, each one placed on a shelf in your shared room as reminders. However, this one was more special, the first one he’d ever officially tossed to you as his girlfriend.
The game was long, but you soon found yourself in the chaos of family members heading down to wait for the guys after post games interviews. You heard Wyatt before you saw him, and before you could even turn to see him, his all too familiar arms were around you.
“Green might be the best color on you.” He hummed, planting a gentle kiss on your head.
A laugh escaped you as you looked up at him, his blue eyes sparkling as always. “I think you just want to convince me to wear your jersey.” You teased him. “You did amazing tonight.” You quickly added in knowing he had managed to score.
Wyatt rolled his eyes before he laughed, taking your hand as you two left. “Maybe I just like knowing you’ll always be the girl I’m looking for.”
