Caleb just wants to be a good dad, as good a father he can be, but he can't help it if he's constantly thinking about his son's welfare. He lost his dear Evelyn, and he won't make the same mistake again with his boy. He scared off that Edric lad (too snarky, seemed like a bully) and that Willow girl (too nice - she had to have been hiding something).
But when Hunter eventually brings in his first actual, committed girlfriend Luz, he's uncharacteristically soft on her. Hunter was honestly quite worried he'd proverbially chase her away too, but the lad's very much relieved to see that he's taking a liking to her.
Little do the two of the know, Caleb is growing a little too soft on Luz, unable to deny how beautiful she is - how bubbly and sugar-sweet the lass is. It reminds him of how Pip used to be when they were boys.
So he'll play nice, but not because it's what Hunter wants - it's because it's what Caleb wants. He can bide his time~
