Outback RoadTrip - Day 7 - Destination Cameron Corner
Before I headed off to Cameron Corner I wanted to take an excursion up the Oodnadatta Track to the Mutonia Sculpture Park.
Last time I was in the area we missed it as we joined the track further north, and seeing as I was so close I went and investigated what it was all about. There isn’t much information on display, but I think the sculptures speak for themselves and it was a wonderful change seeing something so different and obscure in the outback.
On the way to the sculptures I saw a rare site of a dingo and a wedge tailed eagle sharing the same carcass, although as soon I started to slow down they ran / flew away. I made a mental note of the location of the carcass knowing that they would be back and I wasn’t wrong on my return journey. The dingo wasn’t there, but the eagle was and he let me get within a few meters before moving away. This one was a juvenile, but you can see the size of him compared to the emu he is eating! I’d estimate the eagle to be about 75cm tall and that wingspan was almost 2 meters.
I stopped in to Marree again to get just enough fuel to make it to Lyndhurst where I heard the fuel is cheaper as the road trains fuel up there. In Lyndhurst I filled both tanks, which also turned out to be my most expensive refill at $233! Then I made the turn and headed out on to the Strzelecki Track.
If the Birdsville Track seemed like it was barren, the Strzelecki Track is something else. There is minimal vegetation, hardly any visible wildlife, a harsh rocky landscape, dusty, sandy, and at times a little sketchy for driving on.
I nearly rolled the Troopy a couple of times when big potholes were filled with bull dust and are nearly invisible until the wheels hit it and immediately decelerates one side of the vehicle, not fun. I took it a little slower on the more hazardous parts of the track where ruts, bull dust holes and sand is prominent.
After I turned off the Strez and turned towards Cameron Corner the track was a combination of well graded and really fine sand or bull dust. The track passes over dunes and is well graded, except for sime big deep bull dust holes on the blind side of the crest which again made life interesting. Also I came over the crest of one dune and found a herd of cows who really didn’t want to move. No contact made, but 3 tons of Troopy travelling at 80kph into several tons of beef could have made one hell of a bbq.
Once I arrived I checked out the marker for Cameron Corner which is where the 3 states of QLD, NSW and SA all meet. I then drove a few meters and crossed the Queensland border and went in to the Cameron Corner store and paid for a camp spot by way of a donation to the Royal Flying Doctors. The $5 donation is tacked to the roof by folding the note around a heavy coin and a tack and throwing it up to the ceiling. It started what was a really sociable evening with the owners, workers, and other travellers all having dinner and drinks and sharing stories. This was the best night of the trip so far. I skipped on the playing a round of golf whilst I was there. I think it’s the only one in Australia where each hole is in a different state.
