As the year ends, I thought of making a summary of what happened this year mainly because I believe that I have not really communicate at all (life!), so for any person out there that cares it may be interesting to know what the heck that matias has been up to.
2025, huh. Nothing ever happens but at the same times everything happens, so yeah where to start. I really can not complain in the big picture of things, taking into account the general state of the world, hence me never really saying because I felt that to one is interested in hearing petty complains of a mostly happy guy, but here we are.
JOB: NOW EVERYONE IS GONE.
Starting this summary with my professional life may not be particulary exciting, and it is really high in the petty complain category, but you know at the same time is really influences a lot of my daily life, starting with the fact that I am in Toronto and not in my dear madrid, and that is somewhat of importance lol.
The year started without much notice (or notices I can say without risking giving too much away...) so everything looked pretty much the same as last year. Not the most exciting job, but the team was still great so nothing to complain. But then come April, and everything changed when my two inmediate bosses say that they were leaving the project and going back to the central. That was a bit of a shock, and still is, a bit of a schock. Life is pretty easy when you have two persons taking the important decisions and you simply are there supporting them, not so much when you see yourself alone in front of the danger. And that has been my life. My boss boss reemplacement has been great, genuine. She really is the GOAT. the MVP, la puta ama, makina, fiera, mastodonte and deserves much more than what she gets, and the only reason that I have not asked the company to go to other project. But she is pretty much alone also and cant really help as much as she would like as there is too many open fronts. My direct boss? Oh that one they have not find a reemplacement, almost a year already
So now I am the (interim? It has been a year, when you stop being he interim...) technical lead for two of the most important disciplines in the project, lead because its me and my thoughts. Literally alone lol lmao so it has been a lot, even more as right now is the actual important submittal, the final one so I have been expending the last month reading and reviewing hundred of reports, as well as you know dealing with all the construction issues, the subs and what not. I did the count the other day and I have review so far around 56000 pages of drawings and report, and in the awful website I shall not name (my hope is that we are the only imbeciles in the world that use that website in particular, and the rest of humankind lives a better life hence not saying its name...) I have right 37 pending submittal to be review that they would sum around 20000 pages more? And oh you could say, matias, a lot of them are very similar so reading one you read all yes but no. My beloved designers manage to put different mistakes in all reports even if they are similar so you need to fully review all of them. BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS, as the great philosofers of eld would say.
February is coming, and with that the annual salary increase. And we will see, we will see. I hope to see the number go up, if not there may be need to have some talks. I am in the top 20 most veteran workers in the project, after all. Everyone else has left! There is no people in all of toronto, the barrel has been absolutely scrapped of talent. Consequences of the province deciding to do what they have not done in 50 years all at once. But that maybe a topic for another day.
LIFE: General Notes
Okay, with a summary of work done we can start talking about life. The extra workload kinda mush my brain for a period, and that induced in me a little bit of sopor, and just doing the same every day. Not bad, because is not like I am unhappy in my daily (mostly online) routine, but maybe not sustainable in the long run besides you know, it is important to try to somewhat go out of your zone of comfort. Not crazy, but AT LEAST SOMEWHAT. That I have been starting to do end of the year, and 2026 will be the year hopefully were I can say I actually move my ass. In that regard, I have joined the local birdwatching club, the dnd group (they only play 5e but IT IS WHAT IS IS. There are worse prices to pay for getting your ass out of you home and socializing in person, I guess), obtain my driving license so i can actually go somewhere in this province. All of this sponsored because while I have a lot of fun online, and i love and trust a lot of you guys it is also true that if I break my leg tomorrow it is kinda impossible for any of you to help me, or my childhood friends to leave everything in spain to come to toronto... That I realised this year, after 80% of my coworkers left Toronto and I said shit i do not have anyone to call if like i said, I break my leg or I have appendicitis or I want to watch a movie or go see birds or have dinner or WHATEVER. TORONTONIAN FRIENDS, BIG 2026 OBJECTIVE.
In that regard, I have joined dating applications. The thing is that is not really something I crave, I have my emotional needs pretty much covered by family and friends but I must admit part of me is worried that if idk, in 5 years I wake up one morning suddenly saying ¨oh man I feel lonely I need a significant other in my life, I do not feel complete without love and sex¨ it would be kinda late for it. It is never late for love they say, yeah, maybe, but one wonders and one worries. My last romantic experience was 14 years ago! And that was a summer thing, never in my life I have been in a long term romantic relationship mostly because as I said I have never felt like it was missing from my life hence not trying. But alas, like i said, move from my zone of comfort, get my ass outside etc etc etc.
HOBBIES: Travels
I did three big trips this year, all of them really great. First, to the yukon. My mother stayed with me most of the winter and in her infinite wisdom she suggested going to the fucking yukon in January. I said, Mom, is cold, is dark I really do not want to move my ass and like I said her in her infinite maternal wisdom said matias it looks cool and who else can say that they have gone to the yukon in winter? There are dogs, there are northen lights there are snow these are cool. And indeed they are pretty cool. Thanks, mom. I loved the yukon, we only went for a week but it really was a unique experience. Highly recommended! And not particulary expensive, all things considered. Also funny thing that week was warmer in whitehorse than in toronto lol lmao.
Then I went to Spain in April, to see family and friends. For that second part I went to Galicia and Cataluna to put face to long ffxiv friends and it was really cool experience. They are not hot catgirls or twink bunny boys irl but the GOATS nevertheless. We eat a lot, we laugh a lot but was overall an experience I will always remember. The rest of my three weeks in Spain I spent doing boring responsible adult stuff, way less exciting but not less important.
Summer was the rockies and the calgary stampede, with my father and sister. Again, a very good trip. Like I say, my idea for trips in Canada is to try to do things that I would never in my life I would have thought of doing if it was not here building a subway to nowhere in the glacial lacustre soils of ontario. And ¨ Seeing a rodeo in not!Texas" is high in that list. A surprising experience! I did not know what to expect and was pleasant surprised. It was great fun, it felt genuine and so again, highly recommended. Calgary kinda sucks as a city but that is something shared by most of Canada cities (they are not bad bad but they really have nothing going on...) but at least the steaks were good. Oh man canada does not have much in terms of food but it is true that the meat is great, and so we throughfully enjoyed our canadian beef. After the stampede we went to the rockies themselves, and again while cities suck in canada oh its nature. Its nature is breathtaking, that I give to this country. Rockies are impressive in their vastness and magnificiency. Pretty pretty cool. At the beginning our plan was to go to kelowna and Vancouver after banff but then we saw the distances and the prices and said hey maybe not maybe for another day xdddd. So the trip was then completed by going to jasper, Edmonton, and back to Calgary. God I said that calgary has nothing going on but at least nothing is better than bad. Edmonton is quite a depressing city, and we went in August. I can not imagine how it must be in winter. At least again we eat well and the nearby national park is lovely because it is full of buffalos, and only for that it was worth resting there. Besides all the nature and wildlife, special mention-highlight of this trip was the dinosarour museum near Calgary. It is really impressive! And that was it.
Then my sis left and my dad stayed with me for another two months. We did one quick trip to ottawa and it is not bad? Again not the greatest city in the world but not bad for a weekend. Cool museums.
And that is basically all. I am now back in Spain for christmas, but the planned trips here are for january so look forward to 2026 after action report!
HOBBYS: TTRPG
This year I have continued playing in two servers of dnd, one 5e another pathfinder. Great fun. Maybe the drama involving one of them not so much but what is life if not the time between petty discord dramas? How you can say that you are really online if you are not witness of pointless discussion about matters that do not matter at all? I grew old for this, I have a job, I am almost thirty years old i do not have time for these things anymore. But it alas, they keep happening. Such is life. Besides the petty drama, like I said great fun great players and dms and (particulary pf2) it is always a good time. 5e it is in a weird spot, tbh. I wonder how long 2024 will last until wotc realises it needs to actually make a new edition. Maybe they have realised, but they are afraid. Interesting, as interesting that a car in flames going straight into the abyss can be, of course.
HOBBYS: BIRDWATCHING
This year has been the confirmation that yeah i really like going out and trying to get these damn birds. I will probably research more(and ask the people from the clubb) and try to upgrade my equipment. Buy an actual camera, better binoculars etc etc. Birdwatching has been the main motivator to go outside my home this last year besides traveling, so yeah, will try to keep it that way! Bird ares cool, man.
HOBBIES: BEST OF THE REST
I think for the rest of things that bring joy to that my life (music, games, cine etc etc) I have done a better job of doing a summary in other socials, so I believe that to be covered already. I guess my highlight is that silent hill F rocks (glad that my ryukishi is not washed, after these last years exploiting higurashi corpse i was a bit worried ngl), maomao really is the GOAT and that after a series of circumstances i got tired and ended subscribing to the criterion channel so now my objective is to watch a movie every week. I have watched some iranian movies and while I really should do a more thoughtful review the big conclusion is that man I want to go to Iran one of this days. What a beatiful country.
Ah i guess also I like formula one and football. FURBO. Formula one eh. Max almost did it. almost finished the miracle. The session was somewhat boring and at times infurating due to mcclaren being the worst, but at the end Lando Norris is a worthy champion. I have no objections, god knows that I am was not very fond of him at the beggining of the season but when things mattered, he was there. So yeah, congrats Norris. Lets see what happens next season, besides total mercedes dominance. At least I do not mind Russel winning a champioship, he is cool. But please, motor racing gods, please just give a victory to Alonso so this poor soul can rest at peace. Only that.
FURBO is furbo, I have nothing intelligent or worthy to say. Glad that Barcelona has learnt how to play again, glad to see crystal palace winning the FA CUP.
SUMMARY
Like I said in the intro, I can not really complain in the big scheme of things. I am happy, just worried if my happiness is sustainable in the long run lol, but what is a millenial without a constant dread and anxiety sensation about the future ahead, even if there is no actual reason to feel that way? Nothing, I say.
Wonder what 2026 will have in store. Starting with my job, I may complain about it but at the same time it lets me to live alone and have extra money to do basically everything I want (maybe not buy a yatch or a ferrari every month, that is true, so maybe it really is not that good) so i tend to not complain too much. But at the same time while money is not everything blabalb these last months have been a lot but a lot is less if you win idk 10K CAD more for example. Or if they give me a car. Or let me work more days from home. There are a lot of things my beloved company would do, and I hope they do. So far they have been great but a company is a company, and they are not your friends of course.
Then I hope that stabilises so i can focus in the IRL FRIENDS 026 objetive full time and obtain results. Also will try to do more with my online friends. I think i will try to write more here, i do talk about my life in spanish at bluesky or twitter but never in english so you know I also love you guys and I do not want to seem that I do not care or whatever lol. Friendships require nurture!
And that is all, friends. For a happy and prosperous 2026! At the end we are all still alive, and that is what matters. Fighting the good fight, hoping against hope
