For children preparing for kindergarten in Texas, summer camps can be a great way to practice essential social skills.
Summer camps offer children a wonderful opportunity to develop key social skills in a fun and engaging environment. At a learning center in San Antonio, Texas, children interact with peers and participate in various activities that help build communication, empathy, and teamwork.
Girl I'm talking to: can I listen to music on your phone?
Me: sure, do you like fall out boy?
Girl I'm talking to: no every song sounds the same and they said something about pulling a cock
Week Appreciation Post
So, as I may have mentioned before, I work at a camp. This week though, instead of child campers, we're having adults with mental disabilities, some with physical disabilities as well. And they are perfect in every way, even when they're doing something that annoys me to no end. Take for example, one of the two campers in my cabin. Have some quotes, obviously the person responding is me.
"He thought I could date Brenda Noodle. I can't." "Why not?" "She passed. No one can date her."
"I realized why I can't email Linda Morris." "Why?" "She doesn't have a computer. You can't email a computer that isn't there."
"You can't email Amy Ewing." "Why not?" "She's in you know where. You can't email a dead person."
"Don't bother looking for Father." "Why not?" "Because he's up there."
"I don't expect to get one email from a dead person. It's even less likely than getting an email from Carmen." "Why not Carmen?" "She's up above."
*He points to the name tag we had him make* "That's so they can identify me when I go up there. They may have forgotten my name."
He said all of this with most incredible semi-amused voice I've ever heard. My heart broke every time. I heard about every single dead person he knows, generally through a "Don't bother looking for ___" or "You can't email a dead person." It's just so. They're all perfect. I must also mention that many of these campers have gone to camp here for decades. This man in particular has his clothing packed the ENTIRE YEAR and he keeps it in view in his closet to remind himself that he gets to go here. They just love it here so much, apparently it's the highlight of their year. I know I've given up multiple opportunities to work with these sorts before in different settings, but that will never happen again. I'm working with them every chance I get.
Last night, after not saying anything relevant to the ongoing situation the entire day, he gave me a note during craft time. What did the note say? "Thank you for the wonderful evening." I didn't know he was capable of that. My heart melted forever.
I hope this does't seem like a bragging post or something. I just felt the need to express how amazingly much I'm loving this week because of these campers. Like the man who loves America so much he's constantly yelling "glory!" and the highlight of his week will be raising the flag up the pole. Or the woman who talks through her doll in a way that terrifies the counselor she's assigned to. Somehow I know I just started the best week I'm going to have this Summer.
