Something you got (Tipitina)
Si el DJ te deja sin canción por un minuto y así y todo recibís una ovación de pie como esta, algo hay.
----
If your DJ leaves you without a song for a minute or so and you still get a standing ovation like that, you got something.
Michael Darigol vs. Crystal Lee, solo charleston dance-off, Camp Jitterbug 2012.
If you showed this to someone without context, would they be able to tell that Mike and Crystal are competing? They play off each other wonderfully!
Some of the things in this video make more sense if you know that it was filmed at 2am.
Camp Jitterbug 2013!
I learned so much this year and I need to review it over and over to get it to really stick.
Todd and Pamela: Keep feet flat/ don't dance so much on the balls of my feet. When spinning don't go up super high on the balls of the feet or tippy toes and then down low- keep an even height/ level when spinning.
Nina and Andy: Dance low and chill vs "V" and up. When dancing Lindy Circle, keep right foot in center and spin around it. Lindy Circle into a swing out- so just let go on 7+8.
Juan (Argentina) and Sharon (London): Swing out variations. Hand over guy's head, outside turn etc... learning basics to then add them together. Where the lead places his hand on the follow's back gives on idea of the move he wants to lead next. Low hand = turn where follow's arm should be free. Middle hand = swing out. High hand = turn where follow's arm needs to be tight/ good frame like a pop turn. Also learned savoy Charleston. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7+ 1... Anyways look that one up
Thomas and Alice: Dance evenly- then emphasize with pauses and hops. Just be really even and learn to dance evenly before putting in emphasis. Slides vs slip slops. Variations: slip slop with crosses then slide and cross legs. Play with mixing up slides with slip-slops and crosses.
Juan and Sharon: Musicality. 12 bar blues and 32 count (Swing phrasing/ AABA). Dance to the solo, or a beat, or a snare. None is wrong just different. Dancing to the solos allows for dancing to be "fancy." Listen to lots of swing music and learn the solos and structure.
Improv: high + low, kicks, swivels and switches/ twists etc...
Laura: Balboa in and outs. Variations 1, 2, hold hold hold step step step.
The Monday after a weekend dance event
The Jump Session Show 2013, a set on Flickr.
Last week I got to photograph The Jump Session Show, an annual event to help kick off the national Lindy Hop and Jazz event, Camp Jitterbug. Featuring Meschiya Lake & Her Lil' Big Horns, the Jump Session Show takes the audience on a trip through the Jazz era with exciting performances in Tap, Swing, Charleston, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Blues, Hip Hop and more. 100% of the proceeds are donated to Camp Fire USA Snohomish.
