Well a camping event has to have a campfire and songs. We’re going to introduce to some and remind others about the great black folk and bluegrass songwriter, simians guitarist Elizabeth Cotten. Two of her most famous songs are Freight Train and Shake Sugaree. Of course we’ll sing a few familiar #girlscout songs and traditional Gullah praise-house songs too. Did you know as a left handed , Elizabeth Cotten played right handed and upside down? “Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten was an American blues and folk musician, singer, and songwriter. A self-taught left-handed guitarist, Cotten developed her own original style. She played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down, as she was left-handed.” Betty Reid Soskin was also a songwriter so in addition to discussing her book we will celebrate her songs.
