Just Like A Movie Set... . Thick fog hung over the swamp this morning, and looking out into the swamp out back of my camp I couldn’t help but think what a cool location this would be for a short film. The visuals, the sounds, the air heavy with moisture all lend themselves to creating an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. . As I sat at my fire last night, I could hear something large rustling through the underbrush, then making a huge splash. Judging from the commotion as it chased something, no doubt, this was no armadillo or nutria, but the size of a large feral hog. . I’d seen one at the edge of the swamp just up the road at dusk. It was large and stocky, muscular with menacing looking tusks. . They’ve been known to easily kill dogs with those razor-sharp tusks when being hunted and can flip a dog high into the air. Hog hunters here run their dogs, that they’ve trained to fight hogs, but always try to get to where the dogs have a hog cornered before it can hurt or kill one or more of the dogs. They don’t shoot the hog to kill it but plunge 15” knives into the hog, trying to puncture its lungs. I’ve heard and read some pretty wild hog hunting stories. . Feral hogs have become so numerous in the south, and can plow up acres of crop fields in a single night as they forage, that they have become nuisance and real threat to the farm economy. . Louisiana swampland, mysterious and lovely. . Swipe for two more images; one showing how lush the vegetation and Dwarf Palmettos can almost hide my van and trailer. I’m not crouching down for the angle, either. Those Palmettos reach six and seven feet tall. Last image is of last night’s sunset. .
