How difficult is it to double major at Smith? I was thinking about English and Education. Also, it’s my understanding that Smith has a school for young children on campus; I’m hoping to do a work study or something, but I’m wondering what kind of opportunities are available. Thank you for any insight!!
Hi! A lot of people double major, and it’s completely do-able. It takes a bit more forward planning, just because you have two sets of requirements to fulfils, but you absolutely don’t have to know from day one if you want to double major! Yes, Smith has a Campus School and there are a variety of jobs available for students that count towards work-study - some that I can think of off the top of my head are classroom assistants, after-school program aids, break-time supervisors. I also know people who have conducted research with the Education department, and worked with teachers at the Campus School as part of it!

Play Day 1926
Featured photos taken by Herbert C. Ruckmick showing students from the Campus School enjoying a fun day. Top photo shows students engaging in Rovenacka Dance, note the piano on the left. Photo two provides glimpses of High Street. This area, now known as the Bird Sanctuary (west of Old Main, next to High Street) was a popular place for student activities back in the 1920s.
Swim time!
This photo from the Campus School Collection, shows junior high students swimming under the guidance of student teacher, Leonard Barnhill.
The swimming pool was located on the long wing of the east side of the original Physical Education Building which was dedicated in November 1936. This tile pool served the WWU community for over 75 years before it was no longer possible to acquire needed parts. With the renovation of the Carver Academic Building the pool was demolished.
Snow days!
Photos show campus blanketed in snow on several occasions.

Come hear Barney Scout Mann speak on The Pacific Crest Trail: Exploring America’s Wilderness Trail, January 23, 2017, 4 pm in the Reading Room (4 Central) at Western Libraries on the campus of Western Washington University.
‘Round the Maypole
May 1st marks May Day, a celebration of spring’s return (as well as International Workers’ Day). In photos from May Day 1942 provided by Georgia McCush Bianchi Heald, Campus School students gather for a traditional Maypole dance. Time to get out and revel in the mild weather! With proper social distancing, of course.
