How difficult is it to double major at Smith? I was thinking about English and Education. Also, itās my understanding that Smith has a school for young children on campus; Iām hoping to do a work study or something, but Iām wondering what kind of opportunities are available. Thank you for any insight!!
Hi! A lot of people double major, and itās completely do-able. It takes a bit more forward planning, just because you have two sets of requirements to fulfils, but you absolutely donāt have to know from day one if you want to double major! Yes, Smith has a Campus School and there are a variety of jobs available for students that count towards work-study - some that I can think of off the top of my head are classroom assistants, after-school program aids, break-time supervisors. I also know people who have conducted research with the Education department, and worked with teachers at the Campus School as part of it!

continuing trend at work of people assuming i have way more power than i do just because i dress nice. no you donāt have to ask my permission to go to the bathroom. i am very much not your boss, my shift just started before yours. also no i canāt let you into any room you ask me to. do i look like i know where the keys are? i mean i guess i do since thatās the point of the post but i promise. i donāt know where the keys are.

Sadly, those statements of Trump on student loans are scary for a huge number of student loan borrowers. Ā Statements as of May 2017 are that Trump and DeVosā initial education budget will seek to pass the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program which could require student loan borrowers billions of dollars. Ā Trump and DeVos will be expected seek to eliminate over $700 million in Perkins Loans and massively decrease the amount of work-study programs.

On-Campus Jobs
General Information:
Job offerings are posted on Workday (requires a Smith account). Workday is also used to log hours once you have a job. All on-campus jobs prioritize work-study students. If you are not awarded work-study, you can still get an on-campus job; however, not until after October 1st.Ā
The current base pay rate for an on-campus job is $12 an hour. Next semester the base pay rate will increase to $12.75! Other jobs have higher pay rates (STRIDE and America Reads/ America Counts). First-year students can work up to 8 hours a week. Older students can work a maximum of 10 hours a week. Student workers are paid every two weeks (on Friday).
You can learn more about work-study at Smith here.Ā
My Personal Experience:Ā
I started looking for jobs over the summer. I started early because I really did not want to work as a dishwasher. Though I still donāt want to work in dining, I have friends who think it's actually an enjoyable job. I started by looking at Workday but did not find any jobs of interest that I qualified for. Additionally, as a first-year, I did not yet know my class schedule and a lot of jobs asked about availability.Ā
My approach was instead to reach out directly to potential employers. I was interested in working at the Smith College Museum of Art and my aunt, a Smith alumna, provided me with a point of contact. I sent an email to this first person to inquire about work-study jobs at the museum. This happened on the 16th of July. Though this first person did not have any job openings, she directed me to two other people who I subsequently emailed. Of the two, one had a job opening and asked for my CV. From there, I polished my CV and sent it in. Later in the summer, I did an interview over FaceTime. By August 6th, I learned that I had received the job. It was awesome to already have a job when I got on campus.Ā
My work-study job is as a student assistant at the Cunningham Center. I work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, for a total of 8 hours a week. In my job, I pull/return works for classes, frame/unframe works, and set up for classes. Admittedly having a job in addition to classes is time-consuming, but overall it is very rewarding.Ā
Hi! Iām interested in getting a job at the Smith library but am not doing work study. Do you know how thatād work?
JHi! What happens is that because work-study students have top priority in getting campus jobs, you have to wait a few weeks into the semester before JobX (our campus job site) will allow you to send in any applications. After that period of time, itās just a matter of you getting hired! I hope this is helpful :)
