August 26, 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibited the states and federal government from denying voting rights to U.S. citizens on the basis of sex. At the time, this meant that (primarily white) women were granted the right to vote. Although the amendment represented great progress, it took several more years and the unrelenting efforts of many to finally implement universal voting rights for all Americans.
Washington State ratified the Nineteenth Amendment in March 1920, but women in Washington had actually enjoyed full voting rights for nearly a decade since women’s suffrage at the state level passed in 1910.

The ongoing protests of police violence have led many to revisit the history of law enforcement in the United States. Armed police officers may seem like a regular part of campus life at Western and other universities, but it was not always that way. With MABEL you can browse back issues of the Western Front, and learn about the years-long campaign to arm WWU campus safety officers that resulted in the 1990 establishment of a campus police department.

May 1st marks May Day, a celebration of spring’s return (as well as International Workers’ Day). Sound familiar? This was the question on students’ minds in Autumn 1918, when another fast-moving pandemic forced campus’s closure. After the quarantine, however, life and levity returned to campus, as evidenced by the 1919 Klipsun’s whimsical write-up of a challenging academic year. Wisdom from the past!
Covid-19 is on everyone’s mind today, but it’s not the first time that a flu pandemic altered life on our Western campus. On October 8, 1918, the health authorities ordered the closing of the school as a safety precaution. Originally projected to last until November 27th, health authorities lifted the ban a week early and school re-opened on Monday, November 20th. The quarters were adjusted to assist in making up the course work (no online courses then.) But most students returned and all continued well. Image is from the Weekly Messenger, October 12, 1918.
March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
