Students enjoying harvesting from the Liberty University Campus Farm, Spring 2016.
Beautiful morning at the Campus Farm and UMBees Honeybee Sanctuary. Although it's #november 18th still a few sunbathers out. #umbees #campusfarm @kaletothevictors @umcampusfarm @snre #beefriendly #winteriscoming (at Campus Farm at the University of Michigan)
Tuesday, September 24th was certainly a day for volunteers at the farm! We had members of the Eco Reps program, a group of four friends, and three of the new Presidential Ambassadors come out to help weed and harvest.
The crops of the day were potatoes, beets, and yellow pear tomatoes. It was noted early on in our day that the beets had the resemblance of Mandrakes from Harry Potter. Bonus finds were caterpillars, worms, and beautiful weather.
Thanks to everyone who came out. Hope to see you next time!
“Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming? And always the answer is: "Love. They must do it for love." Farmers farm for the love of farming. They love to watch and nurture the growth of plants. They love to live in the presence of animals. They love to work outdoors. They love the weather, maybe even when it is making them miserable. They love to live where they work and to work where they live. If the scale of their farming is small enough, they like to work in the company of their children and with the help of their children. They love the measure of independence that farm life can still provide. I have an idea that a lot of farmers have gone to a lot of trouble merely to be self-employed to live at least a part of their lives without a boss.”

DePauw photographer, Larry Ligget, visited the campus farm to capture the joys of harvesting. And, boy, did he certainly capture them!
"The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings."
-Masanobu Fukuoka

The DePauw women's basketball team--NCAA champions--biked out to the campus farm to help harvest. It was great to have an entire athletic team out there working together. More photos by Larry Ligget here: http://photos.depauw.edu/albums/4141/ Our goal is to have over 300 students visit the farm before the season ends in late October-early November. Hours are M-F 9am-1pm with additional hours on T+W from 4-7pm. Come and bike out to the farm with your organization or just with a group of friends! We look forward to seeing you there!
