I Hate Talking About Politics
I really don't like discussing politics in my game tumblr. However as of late, I've had to come to a hard decision about where I'm getting my games from. As you know, we now have Donald J. Trump in the White House. I'm not American and Donald Trump has been making veiled threats against the sovereignty of my country calling it the 51st state and calling my country's current head of state Governor. Like any red-blooded Canadian citizen, my anger and my stubborn-ness has come to the forefront. While I know that most of you simmers have not liked the fact that Trump has become your president, I'm of the opinion that Donald Trump and anyone who voted for him is my enemy.
We, in Canada, have had an upswelling of national patriotism, even the Quebec nationalists and that takes some doing to piss off Quebec who really prides itself on its cultural uniqueness. We have been talking about boycotting any American company in what would be considered Red-states to bring the pain "home" to those who did vote for Trump. Which for me, that means buying Canadian grocery items, patronizing Canadian service businesses and boycotting anything that comes from the United States.
I will not be buying EA products considering that they are made in Redwood Park, California, at least for as long as Donald J. Trump is in office as President of the United States. I will not be buying anything off Steam for the duration of his term as it is based out of the United States. Which ultimately, means I will not be buying Sims 2 (while it has been re-released), nor will I be finishing up my Sims 3 Stuff Packs purchases at least not while Trump is leading your country. I will play the game and enjoy the expansion packs I already have, but I will not spend my Canadian dollars on US gaming products.
Americans have readily swallowed Donald Trump's lies about subsidizing Canada and the false rhetoric about a $200B subsidy which is in truth the fact that the US buys more services and building materials from Canada versus what we as a smaller 40M population buy in goods from the States is sheer slander on a national scale.
As far as the drugs (fentanyl) is concerned, we stop more fentanyl coming in from the United States than US Customs and Border Patrol stops going into their own country. IN return, we end up having more gun crime because of the guns coming into Canada from, you guessed it, the United States.
National defense is the only sector where Trump has a legitimate gripe and even then, we do not go around causing wars. But we have been negligent in maintaining a force and hopefully our government is coming around to the point where we stop neglecting our Canadian Armed Forces expanding our national defense budget to the point where we can effectively field a force capable of defending our borders especially against the likes of Donald Trump and his military. As the second largest country in the world, we should have a military that is capable of defending our arctic regions. Perhaps it is time for Canada to eschew the nuclear proliferation agreement that it was signatory to and develop our own means of national defense with weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps like Switzerland and Israel, every able-bodied man and women of Canadian citizenship should be required to serve a term in the military and be held in reserve should the need arise for national defense.
If that will stop Trump from his extraterritorial ambitions, then perhaps it is necessary to become a nuclear power.
As it is, I don't see how a 170 year friendship between nations can be rehabilitated after this. It will always be with the knowledge that the nation to the south of us can turn on a dime.
Good luck to all the Americans who didn't vote for Trump. I hope that things will change in four years, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
