When cancer treatment ends.... then what ?

As difficult as you may think, not all people feel relieved when the treatment is over. Some feel angry, sad, lonely or uncertain (because side effects, physical changes or role changes), and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

Most of patients are relieved because they do not have to visit the hospital as much and they can recover from side effects if any; but what about people that are struggling with the irreversible changes on their body, or still asking why they have to fight through all this, or feeling lonely because days on the hospital put friends apart. Is valid to feel this way, even when you are cancer free patient. But the key is to cope with consequence that cancer left on its way, try to see life different on a good way. How? Here is a recommendation:

We all like to know what is going to happen to us, feel secure bout the future, but when this is taken away from us.... then stress is showing up. Stress does not kill people, the reaction to stress is the lethal part. So, learn how to deal with the uncertainty that helps to move forward. Try taking control of the things you can do something about it: Change your diet, good compliance to therapies, add some supplements, etc. Let go things that are not of your control like disease activity, just continue doing the check ups recommended.

For many people, almost half (47%) of cancer survivors, the biggest fear after treatment is wether the cancer will come back. Put aside your cancer diagnoses from most of your daily life, avoid letting be the center of your hole attention. Enjoy family, food, activities, excercise, the sensation of being alive.

Cuando el tratamiento de cancer termina... que sigue?

Por difícil que pueda parecer, no todas las personas sienten alivio cuando termina el tratamiento. Algunos se sienten enojados, tristes, solos o inseguros (debido a los efectos secundarios, cambios físicos o cambios de roles), y no hay sentimiento equivocado o acertado.

La mayoría de los pacientes se sienten aliviados porque no tienen que visitar tanto el hospital y pueden recuperarse de los efectos secundarios si es que los hay; pero ..qué hay de las personas que están luchando con los cambios irreversibles en su cuerpo, o aún preguntando por qué tienen que luchar a través de todo esto, o sintiéndose solos porque los días en el hospital crearon distancia con los amigos. Es válido sentirse de esta manera, incluso cuando eres un paciente libre de cáncer. Pero la clave es aprender a vivir con las consecuencias que el cáncer dejo a su paso, intenta ver la vida de una manera diferente. ¿Cómo? Aquí hay una recomendación:

A todos nos gusta saber qué va a pasar con nosotros, nos sentimos seguros sobre el futuro, y cuando la incertidumbre se asoma ... entonces el estrés aparece. El estrés no mata a las personas, la reacción al estrés es la parte letal. Por lo tanto, aprende a lidiar con la incertidumbre , Intenta tomar el control de las cosas que si dependen de ti: cambia tu dieta, continua con las terapias recomendadas, agrega algunos suplementos, etc. Suelta las cosas que no puedes controlar como la actividad de la enfermedad, simplemente continúe haciendo los chequeos recomendados.

Para muchas personas, casi la mitad (47%) de los sobrevivientes de cáncer, el mayor temor después del tratamiento es si el cáncer reaparecerá. Deja de lado la enfermedad de la mayor parte de tu vida diaria, evita dejar que sea el centro de atención. Disfruta de la familia, la comida, las actividades, el ejercicio, la sensación de estar vivo.

Hoy hable con una paciente que me dijo: no le deseo a nadie que pase por esto para darse cuenta que la vida cotidiana que llevamos no es vida, y lamentablemente el cancer fue lo que me abrió los ojos & me hizo darme cuenta que solo era un robot siguiendo la rutina. Siempre podemos aprender y crecer incluso de los peores momentos de nuestras vida, enfócate en ser una mejor persona y encuentra La Paz de vivir plenamente.

Raul Francisco Martínez-Malo Jr. was born on August 7, 1965, in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents who sought the American dream. His multicultural upbringing in South Florida shaped his distinctive musical style, which seamlessly blended country, rock, Tex-Mex, Latin rhythms, and Cajun influences. The Mavericks' founding members—Malo, bassist Robert Reynolds, and drummer Paul Deakin—formed the band in 1989, creating a sound that refused to be confined by traditional genre boundaries.

The band's breakthrough came with their 1994 platinum album "What a Crying Shame," followed by their biggest commercial success in 1995 with the hit single "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down," featuring Tex-Mex accordion legend Flaco Jiménez. The Mavericks earned their sole Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Here Comes the Rain."

Career Highlights and Lasting Impact

Throughout a career spanning over three decades, Malo demonstrated remarkable versatility as a performer, songwriter, and producer. The Mavericks released more than a dozen studio albums, with their final release being 2024's "Moon & Stars." The band earned consecutive CMA awards for Vocal Group of the Year in 1995 and 1996 and received the prestigious Trailblazer Award from the Americana Music Association in 2016.

After The Mavericks initially disbanded in 1999, Malo launched a successful solo career, releasing nine solo albums that explored various musical territories. He also joined the supergroup Los Super Seven and released the Spanish-language album "En Español" in 2020, which made a bold statement about Latin music's contributions to American culture. The band reunited in 2011 and continued touring and recording until Malo's illness forced them to cancel performances.

Malo first publicly disclosed his colon cancer diagnosis in June 2024. By September 2025, he revealed he was battling leptomeningeal disease (LMD), a rare and incurable complication where cancer spreads to the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Malo maintained his signature optimism and continued engaging with fans through social media.

Just days before his death, over 30 artists gathered at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium for a two-night tribute celebration titled "Dance the Night Away: A 35-Year Musical Legacy Celebrating The Mavericks & Honoring Raul Malo." Performers including Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Jim Lauderdale, and Maggie Rose honored Malo's legacy. Though hospitalized and unable to attend, Malo watched the livestream from his hospital bed while bandmates gathered at his bedside to sing for him.

Country superstar Trisha Yearwood, who collaborated with The Mavericks on a 1995 cover of "Somethin' Stupid," remembered Malo as possessing one of the finest voices of his generation with a larger-than-life personality to match.

Malo is survived by his wife Betty, their three sons—Dino, Victor, and Max—his mother Norma, and his sister Carol. In a statement, The Mavericks honored their bandmate's commitment to preserving multilingual American musical repertoire and championing music education for children across America and throughout the world.

Betty Malo shared her own tribute on Facebook, writing that her husband was "called to do another gig—this time in the sky—and he's flying high like an eagle." She added that no one embodied life, love, joy, and passion the way Raul did, and that he would continue lighting the way for those who loved him.

Am back to writing stories. I’ve decided to at least give an update on what happened to my life the past decade. My last post was 2015 when I decided to pursue another chapter of my life. Never thought that it would last this long. So here goes a chapter I think you guys might get some learnings from and paint a picture of what happened to me 10 years after.
