one of my favourite books of 2020. queenie is a vaguely relatable delight of a novel. the relatable context comes in carty-williams examining relationships, from long term boyfriends to one night stands, all described with unparalleled humour. however, she also tackles certain scenarios that myself and other white women will not face, materialising in various forms of casual, everyday racism. the objectification of BAME women in subtle ways is something i was privileged enough to not consider through naïveté, and this book opened my eyes in a lighthearted yet educational way. a great read, even if it is heartbreaking at points. 4/5 ⭐️ #book #books #bookstagram #candicecartywilliams #queenie #everydayracism #fiction #womensfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CKZsBRSlcd7/?igshid=1qqhcow0p75j0

I'll be honest, I wasn't invested in this after the first chapter but I told myself NOT to give up on it, it was well written but I wasn't connecting to Queenie. I'm so glad I didn't give up, it was an amazing read. It was chocked full of emotions and humanity... Be it bad or good. Queenie made me want to yell at her, shake sense into her, but most of all she made me want hug her (even if she wouldn't like it very much). Her insecurities made my heart hurt but reading her find her strength again was wonderful. Last month I started off the year by reading Queenie by @candicec_w which turned out to be a very good way to start this new decade of reading off to! Reminiscent of Bridget Jones for the current generation, Queenie’s honest voice is funny, important and relatable. So many different elements of life are intertwined in the unique voice of Queenie from mental health to everyday racism, navigating relationships to finding your place in the workspace as well as in the world in general. I loved her interactions with her family and how the different generations communicate with one another and how it shows just how much we can all learn from each other - both young and old. I also enjoyed her friendships, especially her conversations with Kyazike who is feisty, loyal and hilarious in equal measures. ✨✨ Book Review ✨✨ T: Queenie A: CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS Rating: ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ I enjoyed it but not so much. This book had its high points where I couldn’t stop reading the train wreck of Queenie’s life and it had its low points where I didn’t pick this book up for a couple days. To me honesty it was a slow read but I got through it and was proud of Queenie in the end. Majority of the book I kept asking what is this girl doing?! Queenie really made my nerves bad. I’m happy Candice touched on a subject that is so hard to grasp in not only the African American community but in the Caribbean culture that was Mental Health and Therapy. These 2 subjects are so non existent , it’s almost frowned upon and a joke. Queenie’s grandmother’s reaction was a true response that you hear from many people of African and Caribbean Descent. The best decision Queenie made was to seek help and turn her life around. I hated it seemed like a trial basis because she NEEDED some WORK done. Seriously. One friend that really had me going was Cassandra I understand not trying to being someone enabler when it comes to bad decisions but she came off more of a frenemy. I felt like she enjoyed kicking her friend while she’s down. I personally would’ve never accepted her back and I would’ve been petty with the I told you so 😝. Do I recommend? Yes and no.
