NozoEli: We can never be together kiss

It’s always nights like this that break Nozomi’s heart.

Eli warm and alive and real, half a foot away, chest moving as she breathes. Eli, sweet and exhausted and so soft, when her face is open in sleep, every line of stress erased and the plain radiance of her pale face oddly exposed and gratefully blank.

Her skin, Nozomi thinks, would be smooth, like silk, but firmer with those dancer muscles always sliding just below. For a nervous, twitching second she wonders how Eli’s shoulders would taste - how they’d feel under her own lips - and then she rips the imagining apart by the seams, burns the ashes into the dust of her mind and scowls at Eli’s dry, open mouth. 

There’s physical pain in the world - Nozomi has broken ankles, wrists, a finger, once, in a car door slammed; a leg, twice, falling from trees and onto pavement and from horses backs - but loving the sleeping girl next to her is a different kind. She’s not sure which she’d rather take. There’s something like agony in the pulse that beats in her fingertips, feeling the heat from Eli’s entire self so close, but impossibly far. She wants to touch. She needs to feel something, anything.

Nozomi pulls herself up slowly, an inch every few seconds, timing her motion to Eli’s fair breathing. She lays one careful touch of her lips to Eli’s soft cheek, and eases herself back into her territory, knowing she’ll remember the taste for the rest of her life, and hating it.
